For years dirt jumpers and 4x riders had been wanting a dedicated fork from Fox. Something stiff and beefy and light. A few years ago they got the 831. A fork with 32mm stanchions, longer uppers for improved stiffness, a reworked float damper, and a 15mm axle. Some were crushed. They complained the fork wasn’t beefy enough or it was flexy, but that never stopped it from racking up world cup 4x wins and gracing the front of countless professional dirt jumpers.
What riders have clamored for recently is a 34mm version of the 831 fork. While it’s no secret that Cam McCaul has been running a highly modified 34mm Fox Float on the front of his Trek slopestyle bike this year, that option wasn’t available to mere mortals, because the new Fox CTD forks now utilize air springs specific to the forks chassis and travel. While the new forks feel amazing, many (including myself) have been waiting eagerly for this burly small travel 4x/dj oriented option.
According to Cam McCauls Twitter post:
“Putting together a new bike. Looks like this @foxracingshox ‘RAD 34 831’ is gonna fit right in #ridefox”
The “RAD” stands for Racing Applications Development, so it’s probably a safe bet to assume something will be announced in April, when they release the full 2014 line up at the Sea Otter Classic.
