Of all of the past Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships (SSCXWC), there have been a few constants. Single speed bikes only. A big party. Bicycle carnage and general mayhem. The winner gets a tattoo. For 2016, SSCXWCPDX had all of that and more. Including former World Champion CX racer Sven Nys who rode under the pseudonym Stan Nice. Surely, that’s a sign of the end times for SSCXWC, unless it’s not and it’s just a guy who loves racing and having a good time that is making full use of his retirement. Probably that last one.

SSCXWCPDX drew participants from all cycling walks of life, and generally looks like it was a pretty good time. Thanks to the photo collective put together by Singletrack Media Works, you can see for yourself…

Set against a beautiful backdrop on Sauvie Island at Kruger’s Farm near Portland, Ore, SSCXWCPDX offered plenty of mud.

It’s safe to say this was not your standard cyclocross course. Handups are encouraged (forced?).

You might expect for there to be a fair amount of bicycle attrition, and you’d be right. Those stumps on the bottom left used to be part of a fork. Oops.

Rumor has it that there were a number of wizards in attendance.

Cyclocross racers from all reaches of the globe converg on Portland of hard racing and bad decisions in hopes of brining home the golden speedo.

In the end, Adam Craig beat out Stan Nice for the men’s victory… and the tattoo. Jessica Cutler wrapped it up for the women.

In true SSCXWC fashion, Adam and Jessica were tatted up in the middle of a punk rock bar as the crown looked on during the after party. Of course, the golden speedos made an appearance as well.

So glad I rode out to Sauvie. That was possibly one of the best things I’ve ever witnessed.

Curious, read somewhere that Nys took a back seat (assumed he didn’t want a tattoo) as he could have won the race. How (if) did you see it go down?

Are you sure Stan Nice is his name. . .

That mud on Sven’s face was the result of getting one of those Yoga balls up beside the head. He took it all with good grace and IMNSHO would have won if not for the tat requirement. Several times in the race he showed his true power and it was awesome! Never did find out if he did the stripper bus short cut but there are pics about of Adam going through. The mud was epic and the crowd at the edge of riot. Too much fun! Thanks Kruger Farms and the whole SSCXWC gang, who were having as much or more fun than anyone as far as I could tell.

I can say for sure Sven did. He looked lost the first time he came through and I gave him the $1 before taking his bike and handing it to him on the other side. A gentle push on the tush and off he went. I haven’t washed my hands since.

I survived the Everyone’s a loser race on beer, cotton candy, bacon, oreos and dollar hand ups to get into the T&A short cut. It was such an epic weekend!

Funny, similar story on Cycling Tips, and boy the comments section is a CF! Glad to see the BR crowd appreciate this weird/awesome event for what it was.
