Stages Cycling has added the Shimano 12-Speed Dura Ace R9200 and Ultegra R8100 cranks to their Factory Install Power Meter service. The service, which involves retrofitting a Gen 3 Stages Cycling Power meter to the crankset, has long been available for Shimano’s 11-speed 105 crankset, as well as their range of gravel and mountain cranks. Now, riders of Shimano’s latest 12-speed road group sets can benefit from the training and pacing device.
At the moment, Stages are only offering a single-sided power meter installed on the non-driveside crank arm of the 12-Speed Ultegra and Dura Ace chain sets. The new year will bring more options however, with Stages set to offer a driveside Stages R Factory Install as well as a dual-sided Stages LR Factory Install, allowing riders to not only analyse the power of their pedal stroke, but the efficiency of that pedal stroke too.
Previously, Stages Cycling were only able to sell you an entire crankset with their Gen 3 Power Meter pre-installed. That changed in 2019 when they brought in the Factory Installation option, allowing you to send in your own crank for modification.
“Stages Factory Installed power meters are among the most affordable paths to accurate, reliable power,” Sean Coffey, Stages Global Marketing Director, said. “And with current industry-wide product shortages affecting new crank inventory for all models, our Factory Install Service is probably the quickest way to get a world class, precision power meter on your bike and start training.”
Stages are in the midst of a Holiday Sale at the moment, offering the Factory Install service at a reduced price of $243.74 which includes two-way shipping. After purchasing, Stages will provide a prepaid shipping label for you to mail your crank to their Boulder, Colorado factory where they’ll apply the same state-of-the-art manufacturing process they use for their manufacturer supplied units. In around two weeks you’ll receive your original crank arm with a new Gen 3 Stages power meter built in and backed by the Stages Factory Warranty. Stages do still have limited quantities of new Shimano Ultegra 8100 chain sets with the Stages L Gen 3 Power Meter crank arms in stock; those retail at $434.99 USD. Shimano Dura Ace 9200 chain sets are sold out.
