EB17: Stan’s steps up to Podium SRD carbon wheels, gives Sentry, Major, and Baron MK3 upgrade

Wearing the SRD badge for the Stan’s Racing Development program, the new Podium SRD is one of their lightest wheels yet. Using an evolution of their RiACT rim shape and carbon layup process, Stan’s says that through optimization of the layup they were able to remove one ply resulting in an impressive 1287g weight for a 29er wheelset.

Available only in 29″, Stan’s claims that the SRD rim is the lightest they’ve produced at 300g, yet deflects 11% more than the Valor and is 15% more stiff laterally. Measuring 23mm internally, 28.1mm externally, and 18.7mm deep, the rim continues with their BST and WideRight designs, and is laced to their NEO Ultimate hubs with Speedsync freehub. Hubs are stock as 15×100 and 12×142 with additional end caps for QR

Each wheel is laced with 24/28 Sapim 1.8/1.5/1.8mm spokes and Secure Lock Alloy nipples. Complete wheelsets run $1995 and include a wheel bag, small parts back, replacement spokes and a tension read out.

 

Additionally, you can swap out the red Stan’s logo for color of your choice from the six additional colors shown above. Available now.

In addition to the new carbon wheels, Stan’s larger volume wheels are getting an upgrade. Originally part of the S1 series, there will now be an additional version of the Sentry, Baron, and Major in the MK3 series. Moving to the 6069 alloy results in a lighter, stiffer wheel while still keeping the price to just $699. All of the new MK3 wheels should be available by Oct/Nov.

What is the rider weight limit for the podium wheelset?

What are the tire size and pressure limits on the podium? These would be awesome with 30c tires at 60psi.

Ryan that was my thought as well. Super light wheels with 28c tires around 60-65psi would be great on my Emonda Disc provided there are endcaps for 12x100mm TA.

23mm internal width rims and 28 or 30mm wide tires is not that good of a combo from a safety standpoint i would say. 20mm internal rim width rims would be a lot better fit?

ETRTO standards recommend max. rim width to about 65% of the tire size. Might stretch that to 70% if you feel adventurous. But 80% is just being silly.

I have been riding 28-32mm tires on my original edge carbon rims with no problems for many years now, they are the same size. Works great for CX as well.

Zipp’s new wheels, introduced at EB2017 (find the link here on bikerumor):

Quote: “They have a 21mm internal width for 202 & 303 (28mm tire optimized), and 19mm for 404 & 808 (25mm optimized tire). They say they prototyped several widths and shapes to offer the best application specific tire sizes and this was the result.”

So Zipp says that their 202 & 303 rims are optimized for 75% of tire size. Their 404 & 808 rims are optimized for 76% of tire size. Yet you call might call that silly.

Maybe Zipp should have asked you before they built their rims!

Here is some feed back for Stan’s Notubes:

1.) Graphics-> can we have simple and understated graphics on the rims. Stan’s makes the best rims in the world and doesn’t need NASCAR style graphics to market their rims. Could we just have in a simple hand written font “Stan’s Notubes Podium SRD” silk screened on the rims. This would make for a nice, simple, elegant, and light weight graphic.

2.) Good Vibrations-> Materials Sciences Corporation of Horsham Pennsylvania has vibration damping technology called Countervail which for some reason has not been applied to carbon rims yet. As the market gets flooded with carbon rims this would be a great differentiator for Stan’s Notubes carbon rims. Not to mention these boys are right in your back yard, 242 Miles away, you could be there by lunch time.
