What better way to spend Labor Day weekend than thrashing yourself at the 2nd annual Steamboat Springs Stage Race in idyllic Steamboat Springs, Colorado? That’s what I intend to find out over the coming four day weekend. The event starts with Friday’s prologue, then features a 4.5 mile circuit race on Saturday, a road race on Sunday and crit on Monday. While not quite as daunting as say 6 days on your mountain bike in Breckenridge, Colorado, the race is sure to offer up it’s share of suffering. Read more about the event after the break.
While the crit is still the king in the U.S. racing scene, stage races are starting to gain in popularity. Last year’s event was such a success that this year the race has more on offer in the way of prizes, giveaways and events. There is now $7,500 in total cash payout, equal payout to the Pro 1/2 men and women and over $2,500 in daily prizes. All starters are also automatically registered to win a Moots frame. Moots is based in Steamboat Springs and is a major sponsor of the race. Also added to the schedule is a showing of the new cycling movie Chasing The Legends, which will be shown on Saturday night, and is a fundraiser for the Routt County Riders/Safe Routes to School program. The Moots BBQ is sure to be a big hit as well.
I will be on hand, or more accurately on the road, giving a first hand account of each stage. Keeping checking back to see photos and read the race reports.
