For years British CNC specialists Superstar Components have machined alloy chainrings, bashguards, GPS mounts, pedals, and the like in UK. Now, since the end of last year, they’ve brought both Road2 & V6 mountain bike hubs in-house too, and are lacing up a large catalog of stock & custom built wheels at affordable prices.

Superstar’s newest generation of V6 disc brake mountain and Road2 rim brake road hubs are the latest to move production to their Lincoln, England factory in the East Midlands. While they had been CNC machining tons of other components in-house, Superstar felt there still weren’t enough high-quality UK-made hub options available, especially at an affordable price point (obviously Hope comes to mind for a few extra £). So they designed, prototyped & testing a new series of hubs to be milled out of 7075 T6 alloy billet, anodized over in Manchester, then brought back for finishing with Leicester-made steel pawls & engagement rings, and Swedish SKF custom sealed bearings.

The flagship of their new UK hubs are the V6. With oversized 60mm diameter flanges the 6-bolt hubs hit a reasonable weight with quality internals, modular axle compatibility, and plenty of shiny color options.

Interchangeable end caps let them get set up with QRs, 12mm & 15mm thru-axles, and both traditional or Boost spacing. There are even special Boost upgrade end caps available that will let you space out a standard set of hubs in the future if you re-dish the wheel.

That makes them a solid match for anything from all-road riding, through gravel, cross, XC, and into trail & enduro. For more gravity riding, a 20mm front option dubbed the V620 is expected to roll out next fall, with a DH version next year too.

The V6 hubs get 6 pawls with a 54 tooth engagement ring for fast engagement, and claimed weights of 190g for the front & 330g for rear hubs. V6 hubs are available in 24, 28, 32 & 36 hole drilling in ten ano colors: black, blue, gold, gunmetal gray, lime green, orange, pink, purple, red & silver. Shimano or XD/XDR freehubs bodies are also made in-house, with a Campy version coming in summer.

UK-made V6 pricing is £50 for front hubs & £130 for rear hubs (~$65/165 or ~55/145€). Superstar also offers a number of complete mountain bike wheel options, laced in-house with tubeless alloy rims starting from £300 complete.

On the rim brake side of things the new UK-made Road2 hubs offer much of the same tech in a more classic setup.

You still get British machined 7075 alloy, oversized flanges & custom sealed SKF bearings.

This time it’s QR & rim brake only for more traditional road, gravel, or cross, with just 2 pawls & a 27T engagement ring in the rear. The Road2 hubs are lighter at 80g/280g and come drilled 20 front & 24 rear, in black or red ano. Shimano freehubs are available now, with XDR & Campagnolo coming soon.

Pricing is the same at £50 front / £130 rear for the hubs on their own, with complete alloy road wheelsets from £280.

Not sure going UK made is of such a benefit to the customer really? Front boost and non-boost hubs are the same but with different end caps and dishing so not done ‘properly’, no steel freehub option, you can physically see the grain direction in the material on the hubs due to them being turned from bar-stock rather than forging (didnt Hope hubs crack when they used 7075 bar-stock, no issues since moving to forgings?) and pricing at RRP now puts them much closer to a full Hope setup and while these may be comparable in some ways you do get a better ‘investement’ from Hope.

Way back in the way back when of 2005-6 I lived down the street from Superstar when they had just opened up shop in Lincoln. They were picking parts to sell out of the HT and Ringle catalogues, making stuff in house was massively out of reach financially but something they talked about even then. It’s been cool to see them build up and up over time, one machine making odd little bits out of plastic, then a proper CNC mill, now they’ve got a full production line and they make stuff for other companies (such as the linkages on Stanton FS frame) as well as their own parts. Long may it continue.

Hello sorry to the USA guys it’s just not economicaly viable to ship to the other side of the planet one wheel at the time, and insurers don’t want to cover for liability due to the legal system making suing for anything easy.

As a direct seller we focus on our “local” European market as it just make sense. Especially as we sell direct only.

Centre lock and lots of other variations are coming but one step at a time! We have the Shimano license, just a lack of time!

Front boost hubs with slammed out flanges are actually weaker as the slack side gets so floppy it causes problems. Do the trigonometry and it is the best way. Rear doesn’t work that way hence 2 models. It’s a blank sheet design so we have done it right.

The hope cracking was due to a forging compression fault creating a issue at the join. Our hubs are overbuilt as they are so I can’t see any issues from overkill strength 7075 material. We are currently sourcing forgings but the main reason is to cut machining time and billet cost, downside is the large upfront costs of tens of thousands of billets.

The offer has been extended to the weekend as we have been trying to keep up with the zillions of emails, so people won’t miss out.

Been a busy year as we actually manufacture for a lot of other people in and out the bike industry. So if you want cool stuff making in volume contact us http://www.superstarmanufacturing.com

Any questions let me know.
