While most of the attention at Saddle Drive was focused on the new fat bikes coming out of the Salsa tent, there were still quite a few Ice Cream trucks rolling through the dirt. First introduced earlier this year at Frost Bike, the Ice Cream Truck brings Surly’s fat bikes into modern standards with a symmetric design and thru axles front and rear. Using their proprietary ED coated 4130 CroMoly frame and fork, Ice Cream Trucks will be offered in both 5″ and the smaller 4″ Ops versions.

As one of the biggest differences between the ICT and the ICT Ops, the Jack Frost Blue monster rolls on 4.8″ rubber mounted to 100mm wide Clown Shoe rims. This ultra fat combo is thanks to the 190/197mm rear and 150mm front spacing offered by the Surly MDS dropout system. While the bike will ship with 197mm thru axles, it can also run 190mm QR or single speed dropouts. Also, with the suspension corrected fork (483 A2C) set at 150x15mm and a 44mm head tube, the ICT is RockShox Bluto ready without having to build a new wheel.

In this case the Ice Cream Truck, not the Ops version, is the higher end spec with a Shimano SLX/XT 2×10 drivetrain running a Surly OD 22/36t crankset. Other highlights include SRAM Guide RS hydraulic brakes, Salsa ProMoto 2 bars, and Salsa hubs. Pricing for the 5″ ICT is $2,700, with frame sets offered in both Blue and Black for $850 which includes all three MDS Dropouts. Compared to the large ICT we weighed at Frost Bike, the production version has gained about 2 lbs at 36.44 lbs (16.52kg).

Equipped with a slightly different spec and Surly Nate 3.8″ tires on 82mm Rolling Darryl rims, the ICT Ops is as Surly puts it, the “little brother” to the Ice Cream Truck.

Spec changes include Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes with 180/160mm rotors front and rear.

Both ICT models use the same Pressfit 41 132mm bottom bracket that is also found on the Salsa Blackborow. The offset design requires the use of the Surly OD crankset which runs 22/36t rings.

The drivetrain consists mostly of Shimano SLX components with Microshift SL-T10 thumb shifters and a KMC X10RB chain. Also sold stock with 197×12 and 150×15 dropouts, the medium ICT Ops weighs in at 34.94 lbs (15.84kg). Both bikes and frames should be available this August. Heavy and expensive. A lot of newer fatbikes are lighter WITH a Bluto.

Consider these are steel and that Surly’s in general are not lined up to compete for the same buyer that would buy a Fatboy. Consider the Moots Frost-Ti. Granted it is a frame and not complete but $$ wise it is more then a Yampa and can weigh roughly the same. Think we are seeing the fat bike lines staring to be drawn in the sand. Some for racing and going fast. Others for trail duty and gettin’ rad. Others for snow and sand. Me? I was tempted to get a fattie but when I can ride a 23lb full squish I am gonna reach for it every time.

I’ve got one of these on the way. I don’t really care about the weight, but the spec of the SRAM brakes does disappoint me a little. Hopefully, these ones will work better than my Elixirs did. Guess we’ll see. Easy enough to buy some Avid mechanicals if the Guides sh*t the bed.

Surly is going off of cult following alone. There are far better options for slow guys who refer to themselves as “trail” riders.

I’ve ridden a bunch ‘o fatties (c’mon, they’re fun!), from Surly, Salsa, Specialized, 907…they are all nice bikes and can be tweaked for all matter of service…the welds on the Specialized Fat Boy look like a bad worm fight. I’d wait for them to figure it out, or hire somebody from the old days @ Cannondale.
