The Tailfin SpeedPack is the brand’s newest bag and integrated rack, with the claim of “the fastest pack in the world.” How Tailfin backs that claim up is a bit cloudy, but they say that they designed and engineered the SpeedPack with the fastest endurance cyclists on the planet.

The New Tailfin SpeedPack

Tailfin engineered the SpeedPack with ultra-distance racing, bikepacking, and everything in between in mind. The system is similarly designed to the CargoPack, formerly known as the AeroPack (they changed the name to eliminate confusion). Tailfin’s CargoPack (formerly AeroPack) performed just as well or better than other saddle bags during the brand’s – and our testing.

So, a claim of “the fastest pack in the world” is perhaps appropriate for the Tailfin SpeedPack. With a slimmer profile, the lighter and smaller rack/bag combo is likely to perform better — or “faster” — than the larger CargoPack.

Tailfin’s design eliminates many of the frustrating issues commonly encountered with different types of frame bags. The SpeedPack quickly locks into place, without the use of velcro, without any sway, sag, or movement while you pedal. Set up is easy, fast, and repeatable, making the bag system easy to remove when not in use. And it is also 100% waterproof.

Venturing away from the top entry design of the CargoPack, the Tailfin SpeedPack is accessed from the rear. It also incorporates an integrated arch, eliminating movement while maintaining the weight of the bag in balance. The SpeedPack’s rear entry also allows for easier cinching and overall compressed packing of the bag. Overall, the SpeedPack is smaller than the CargoPack with 10+3L of storage, vs. 18L for the CargoPack. That makes the SpeedPack more suited for rides where packing fast and light are appropriate.

SpeedPack Details

The Tailfin SpeedPack is available in two options: as an integrated rack system or as an individual pack (to be used with your existing Tailfin rack system). Tailfin designed the SpeedPack to be compatible with all of its systems, making it fully integratable into the Tailfin multiverse.

Made from a combination of 420D Hypalon and nylon diamond ripstop material, the SpeedPack can take quite a beating. Similar to their other products, Tailfin put the Hypalon in areas that will receive more wear, and the more flexible ripstop where it made the most sense.

Also, Tailfin welds all the seams on the SpeedPack. Moving away from sewing seams creates an entirely waterproof bag that can handle anything thrown at it.

As someone who has used a lot of bikepacking saddle bags, this product does not make sense to me. This style of bag is substantially harder to load and access than their older top-loading design. And there are many other saddle bags on the market that are stable and have similar capacity but do not require the complexity, weight, and cost of the full rack system seen here. This product looks to have taken the worst aspects of a rack system and a saddle bag and combined them in to one baffling (and expensive!) product.

For anyone having a bike that has fender and rack mounts this is a complete waste of money. There are numerous rear racks available in all price ranges along with bag and pannier manufactures that will accept more weight and volume if needed. I’ve seen users on Youtube that have seen these rack break during their adventures.

Pretty sure the only people buying this are using them on expensive bikes for ultralight ultra-distance fkt style riding, or as a bling trunk bag on a bike that can’t fit much else.
Touring/Commuter bikes with mounts are obviously NOT the target market.

As someone with a Tailfin rack system, the big win for me is how easy it is to remove the rack and the bags. No tools required, and can be done in seconds. Additionally, moving the rack from bike to bike is trivial.
