British manufacturer, Unite Co, has released its latest line of mountain bike components with a Cerakote finish, all delivered with a head-turning Paint Splatter effect. The Crankset, Renegade Stem, Instinct Pedals, Seat Post Clamps, Headset Spacers, as well as Round and Oval Chainrings, are all available in the Paint Splatter finish; there are 10 base colors, 13 colors for the first splatter color, and a further 13 colors for the second splatter, making for endless possibilities (or at least, too many for me to bother doing the math).

Unite Co Cerakote Paint Splatter

Cerakote is a ceramic-based formulation that serves to improve a surface’s abrasion/wear resistance, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, impact strength, and hardness. Unite Co are offering most all of their components with the Paint Splatter Cerakote finish in a bid to improve the aforementioned surface properties of each.

The Unite Co Crankset is available in DUB or 30mm axle options, with 165mm, 170mm and 175mm crank length options to choose from. It is made from 7075 aluminum and weighs a claimed 560g in the 170mm crank length. The regular crankset retails at £239.99 (without the chainring), but the Custom Paint Splatter Cerakote edition pictured here comes at a premium; £269.99.

Internally, it runs on a 17/4 stainless steel axle with four IGUS bushes and two cartridge bearings. Claimed weight for a pair is 435g. The regular anodized Instinct Pedals retail at £119.99. These Cerakote ones will set you back £149.99.

I don’t know what it is about boutique cranks, but small manufacturers have been turning them out ever since I can remember, yet these cranks barely make a dent in the market, judging by what I see out in the wild (and I live in a relatively affluent, cycling-friendly area). Just sayin.’

I don’t think the aim of most of the brands making these things is to have a substantial market share. They make boutique products, so by definition they are aimed at a niche market. Some people have money to burn and like that stuff, and if you make them with a good margin I’m sure that can be reasonably profitable.
