If you’ve ever considered building out some sort of adventure vehicle, then you’ve certainly done the math. It can cost a lot of dollars to deck out a Sprinter or similar vehicle as your home base. But it doesn’t have to.

Inspired by finding a way to make surf trips down to Mexico a bit more enjoyable and (in the long term) more affordable, The Baja Box is the story of Austin Smith’s box truck conversion, captured beautifully by filmmaker Tyler Orton.

Starting with a $4,000 box truck, the team ended up building out the inside, adding a roof top deck, lights, solar panels, beds, and a dirt bike rack and did the whole conversion in two weeks – partially while in Mexico. Obviously, Austin’s build is focused on surf trips, but the same principles could easily be applied to mountain biking with a little imagination for bike storage.

BR has to put together their own van. There’s talking, and there’s doing. Watt’s van doesn’t count.

I’m assuming Watt’s van has the windows painted over and is emblazoned “free candy.”
