Whyte Bikes is best known for its mountain bikes, but the UK brand just announced two new gravel models, the Verro and Tourus, comprising its small range of drop-bar bikes. While the two models share the same frame, their builds help differentiate them and their intended uses. Between the rough gravel and adventure-ready Verro and the touring/commuting/light gravel-oriented Tourus, Whyte’s new bikes should cover the needs of most recreational gravel riders. While they might not be the flashiest bikes or builds around, the Verro and Tourus are nicely equipped at their respective price points. These budget-friendly bikes appear to be great values and solid options for those looking to get into gravel riding or add a bike to their quiver without breaking the bank.

Whyte Verro and Tourus Frame Details

Both the Verro and Tourus share the same 6061 T6 aluminum frame and straight-bladed 6061 alloy fork. The frame has internal cable routing through the headset, with weather-sealed cable ports to keep water out. The frames are dropper post compatible and have clearance for tires up to 700 x 50 mm. Mounts on the fork and numerous mount points on the frame should make it easy to load it up with bags and accessories of your choosing. Muguard mounts should also make it easy to add some weather protection if needed.

Geometry

The Verro and Tourus share the same mountain bike-inspired geometry but come with different builds to suit their intended uses.

The Verro and Tourus are designed with Whyte’s “Total Geometry” approach, which includes “a unique blend of our mountain bike and gravel innovations to deliver you the best, most confidence-inspiring and capable ride possible.” The mountain bike influence is visually apparent with relatively high stack and long reach measurements paired with short stems and wide handlebars.

Otherwise, the geometry chart reveals fairly neutral numbers, like a 70-degree head tube angle and a 74.5-degree seat tube angle, along with longer 445 mm chainstays for stability at speed or when loaded with gear. Overall, it appears to be more comfort- and adventure-oriented, as opposed to racy or aggressive. The five frame sizes, XS-XL, are claimed to fit riders between 5’0” and 6’5” (152 to 197 cm).

I really do not understand the current geometry trends for road or gravel! Since when does a frame with a 398.5 mm reach equate to an Extra Small? The wife who is ~172 cm tall, rides a Scott Contessa Solace road bike with a ~368 mm frame reach and is what the company at the time charted as a size M. I am ~180 cm tall but shrinking as I near retirement, and my road bike has a reach of ~384 mm, so I see no way that either of us could even get a proper fit much less ride the Extra Small frameset!

I understand things cost what they cost. But how on earth quad digit price for a bicycle can be termed as “reasonable”?
