WTB builds 1st-ever complete gravel & trail wheels, Proterra Light & Tough on a budget

WTB who has long made road, gravel & trial tires and the alloy rims to put them on, has now added affordable complete wheelsets with the Proterra Light & Proterra Tough wheels. Developed to provide affordable, reliable alloy wheels to any gravel or mountain biker needing an upgrade, four different California-handbuilt wheelsets range from 23-30mm inside, all at just $650 for the pair.

Developed to take the hassle out of buying replacement wheels, WTB figured they would leverage their rim & tire experience into creating trusty wheels from all-road and gravel to cross-country, trail, all-mountain & enduro. WTB’s new wheels get divided into two categories: Proterra Light & Proterra Tough.

Tech details

The lightweight 700c/29″ Proterra Light double wall rims for gravel feature 23 or 25mm inner widths, mountain with 27mm internal – with claimed wheelset weights of 1783g, 1717g & 1930, respectively.

The heavier duty Proterra Tough 30mm internal rim with internal reinforcement for more aggressive trail and all-mountain riding, building into a 2006g 27.5″ or 2112g 29″ wheelset.

All of the 6069 alloy rims are TCS tubeless-ready, with wheels handbuilt 3x with double butted J-bend Sapim spokes by WTB in their California wheel building facility, just under Mount Tamalpais.

The new wheels all feature WTB-branded alloy Proterra 6-pawl hubs with 3.7° engagement. The gravel wheels get 12mm thru-axles (100/142mm spacing), 28 spokes, alloy nipples, and centerlock disc brake mounting. And the mountain bike wheels use Boost standard axles, 32 spokes, stronger brass nipples, and 6-bolt rotors. Hubs are available with XDR or HG freehubs for gravel, XD or Microspline for MTB.

All wheels come with the full WTB TCS 2.0 (Tubeless Compatible System) setup ready to install tires – Solid Strip (which supports tubeless tape over the nipple holes), TCS tubeless tape & black alloy valves already installed. Just add tires & sealant.

The new WTB Proterra gravel & mountain bike wheels all sell for the same $650 complete wheelset price. They are also available individually for $295 front & $355 rear if you don’t need the matching pair. All Proterra wheels are currently in stock, available direct from WTB.
