Recently, “3 Feet Please” sent us a jersey to check out (shown in pic, click to enlarge), and it’s a nice jersey, but what’s really important is the message.  As cyclists, we know we have a legal right to the road, but it’s nice to know what those laws are.  In 11 states (listed after the break), three feet is the legally required space that motorists have to give cyclists.  There is pending legislation or action in Colorado, Washington and Maryland, and less clear laws or guidelines in HI, OH, SC and VT.

I can tell you this:  The jersey gets noticed.  The first time I wore it, a car (granted it was a cyclist driving it) pulled up next to me while riding and asked where I got it, saying that he had stopped riding road because he had had too many close calls.

So, until motorists stop acting like terrorists and realize that we are sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters, too, this jersey can help get them to at least notice you more if not change their habits.

Read “more” to see a video news story about this law, a list of states with the law and more links to take action in your state…

The front is available in two styles.  You can order it like shown (click to enlarge), or for states where it’s not a law, they offer one with a blank front.  They also have a long sleeve option and t-shirts.  I say be an optimist and just order the one that says “It’s the Law” in anticipation of your state gettin’ with the program.

(it’s worth noting that they sent the jersey unsolicited, so it was 2sizes2big, which is why it looks huge.  I’m 6’2″ and normally wear a Large jersey.  This one is a XXL.  It’s a very nice jersey, high quality from Voler, 3/4 length hidden zipper.  MSRP $60 w/ free shipping.  Order here.)

States that have a “3 Feet 2 Pass” Law include:

  • New Hampshire
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas,
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Maine
  • Minnesota
  • Oklahoma
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Wisconsin

France also has this law in place, and you can find out more about pending legislation and links to take action on 3feet2pass.com.  Now, if you want to get angry, watch this:
