Mongoose BMaX fat bike bmx (3)From the same company that brought you the Beast fat bike and the smaller, yet somehow better equipped 20″ Massif fat bike, we present the BMaX. Part BMX, part fat bike, all bizarre. Truthfully though, as far as entry level BMX bikes for kids go, it does look pretty fun. Built with 20″ wheels wrapped in 4.25″ wide rubber, if junior can’t turn the pedals at least the bike will turn some heads…

Mongoose BMaX fat bike bmx (2)Basically just a BMX bike built to accommodate the wide 4.25″ tires, the BMaX uses the same rubber that you’ll find on the Massif kids’ fat bike. The actual weight isn’t listed, but the shipping weight clocks in at 60.1 pounds which means the BMaX probably is not light. Let’s hope the single speed, freewheel drivetrain is geared low enough to turn the pedals.

Mongoose BMaX fat bike bmx (1)A single linear pull rim brake is there to slow the massive tires by clamping down on the 36 hole alloy rims laced to bolt-on, BMX hubs. Available in a single black/grey build, the Mongoose BMaX is now the least expensive bike in their fat tire range selling from Walmart at $159. Who knows, it could be the perfect training bike to dial in those lawnmowers…

That gearing is definitely overkill for little kids that will get a max speed of like 10 mph or something. Maybe their plan was to create the ultimate quad-building machine for someone that wants to practice low cadence riding.

p.s.- this is only addressing the move to wider freestyle tires. most freestyle bikes these days are running 2.40 slicks. Mongoose just up’d the game.

Jake…excess stuff and even lower prices simply means you’re buying even lower quality junk. A NORMAL BMX bike under $200 is pretty lousy. This has big rims, big tires, wider crank…those options should cause a price jump. The fact that they don’t only means a huge drop in quality. A HUGE DROP IN QUALITY from the typical TERRIBLE $200 BMX bike. Try to cheapen a $200 BMX bike to $160 and you get parts that were sucky but functional, to sucky and very short lived. Now add huge tires, rims etc…you’re getting a bike that ways more than some of the kids that are gonna be riding it but I guess it won’t be so bad since it’ll fall apart before they can get hurt.

@Remi,
That’s a shipping number, not bike weight. It’ll probably only weigh 2/3 that, maybe a bit less.

Honestly, the price per pound is pretty good. Oh, wait, it’s not supposed to work that way?

Dockboy… there is not way in hell that there’s 20lbs of packaging for a 20 pound BMX bike. Maybe 10lbs but not 20lbs. That still makes for a 50lb bike for a kid that may be 50lbs. I weigh about 185. I couldn’t imagine riding a 185lb bike. Hell…I’ve rode a friend’s fully loaded touring bike at 60lbs and it was crazy heavy.

@dockboy – oh! thanks! I blew by the “shipping” part at the sight of 60lbs. I guess 45 lbs is pretty standard for your run-of-the-mill dept store bike.

I wonder if Mongoose ever has plans to offer aftermarket parts for these bikes (or any of their bikes). More often than not a kid breaks something or it gets backed over by an SUV in a driveway, and the replacement parts and labor cost 2 or 3 times the price of the bike.

So now they have a wider bb, wider tires, some strange V-brake, and a fork that probably doesn’t exist anywhere else in this galaxy and they’re setting it loose to America’s finest to destroy. Subsequently, it’s up to bike shop employees to explain the whole process to Sam Walton’s bargain hunters. How much are those tires to replace? and where do I get ’em? Why not use a coaster brake?

Dear Mongoose, what are you doing?

Ah, it may be a cheap POS, but I think it looks like its fun to ride. Good training for scooters and….well you know.

Who comes up with this stuff? Honestly. What a POS.

I REALLY want to see someone ride this hard on an aggressively banked pump track. No possible way tires that big and cheap would stay on the rim under those conditions. Although the solid wire beading could help explain the crazy weight of this thing.

Mongoose does offer replacement parts- you just throw away the bike once it gets a flat and buy a new one. No need to fix it.

Also I am a bit of a grouch about fat bikes but slowly coming around, but there isnt a snowball’s chance that BMaX is going to catch on. 2.4’s feel great but we are talking concrete, wood, groomed dirt-not exactly areas where you need gigantic tires for traction. I second @luiggi haha kill it quickly!! And burn the body!

Mongoose has the ability to make these just as a market test, even if they break even on them its getting it talked about… its called marketing. it could of very well cost $100 to make a limited run of these.

Relax people. It’s a cheap bike from Walmart for loudly crying out loud, it is what it is. I give them credit for thinking outside the (25#) box.

Fortunately the town in which I live is not forcing us to buy one, maybe you haters should move here and relax a little bit.

BTW, shipping weights are typically padded a bit.

As a bike shop owner and a guy who has to work on these “bikes”, I say c’mon down. Your money is green too, I’ll work on it. I’ll gladly wrestle the tire off and put in another big ‘ol floppy tube for ya.
However, the reality of these bikes is a mechanic dies just a little inside each time they have to dead-lift one into their stand. Also, there is a limited amount of mental storage space in a mechanics head for crap like this.
After rebooting my head for 2005 the file with the WallyWorld Orange County Chopper Swinn (not SCHwinn, but Swinn) is right there. I remember a lot about those… The main thing I remember about those bikes is they are like herpes. Right when you think they’re gone….

I had to assemble the 26″ fat bike last week. Unboxed weight was 49.3 lbs.

I just bought this bike today and it’s awesome! I’m 130# and not a little kid and just went off-road in the snow and dirt and it handled really well. As far as weight, it is a bit more heavy than your average BMX but as far as pedaling, it’s very easy to get going good speed. I rate this bike a 9/10. I absolutely love it and definitely worth the money.
