Kore Stronghold narrow wide chainring with hooked teeth

The new Kore Stronghold narrow/wide chainring uses a hooked tooth design that grabs and holds the chain around the ring when riding without slowing down release at the appropriate point. That means excellent chain retention, so you won’t need a clutch rear derailleur (but they’re still nice), and you definitely won’t need a chain guide.

Retail will be just $59 for the 32 and 34 tooth rings, and $63 for the 36 tooth. A 30-tooth will also be available but requires additional material around the bolt holes to give it room away from the spider, plus a little extra machining, so it costs a bit more at $72.

The teeth have a now-ubiquitous narrow/wide thickness profile. What really sets them apart, though, is the shaping on the teeth’s other walls:

Notice how each tooth has a slight, pointed lip to it, just before the angle bends toward the tip of the tooth. That helps hook the chain and keep it there, something evidenced by the chainring hanging from the chain in the first pic.

They’re also offering a new oversize cassette adapter cog. Called the Mega Range Sprocket, it’s available in 40 and 42 tooth options and include a longer B-screw. Retail on those is $75.

They’ll be available in SRAM and Shimano cassette specific designs that include the appropriate spacers and clocking. Both the ring and the sprocket will come in black, silver, red, purple, green, orange and blue.

This picture doesn’t show it, but the width at the base of the expander cog is very troubling. Alloy freehubs beware.

Yawn. When sram released X-sync they had photos showing the same chain holding ring thing.

Try it with a non-narrow wide thing….it does the same thing!

This looks like it would add drag to the chain under real off-road conditions.

The showed a picture on vital of people trying to physically pull it apart. that seems a little more hardcore than what I saw of the x-sync ones…

I wonder if it wears down in a few miles and cannot perform that test.

I want a 40T compatible with the M9000 XTR crankset for a 1x CX setup.

I wonder how much added friction it adds when pedaling?

@rivers and fueledbymetal,
None. When pedaling, you only apply force in one direction so only the rear face of the chain rollers contacts the front side of the chainring teeth. In the demo, the chain is hung from the middle, grabbing the chainring from different directions. If there was any friction that kept the chain stuck to the chainring, you would constantly get massive amounts of chain suck.

Huh. So when you wear down the chainring it should actually help dramatically increase any chain suck you may get. As teeth wear down the get a “hook”. Add in this little dimple and you may be looking at some pretty sweet chainsuck pretty soon into riding the chainring. I could be wrong though.

Wait, were we dissatisfied with the chain retention abilities of the current narrow-wide rings? I haven’t dropped a chain once in the 300 hours of riding since I put my RF NW ring on.

Nice to see a Christmas theme starting early this year. Ornaments are getting expensive.

I’d actually need to know what the what? radius is of the curve for that so called “point” on the tooth?

That simply appears to me as a tooth profile a la Sram, Wolftooth or Blackckspire (long + squared) but instead of that tooth profile continuing to end of tooth, thus producing the very squared profile of the aforementioned iterations of the NW ring, this one starts tapering it before the end of the tooth.

Does that make sense? I really do not think there is anything new going on here.

Reminds me of my last girlfriend… just doesn’t know when to let go.
