Dave Zabriskie held on to his 30 second time gap through Saturday’s Stage 6 and today’s final stage to take the overall win, his first stage race overall win of his professional career.  Photo above from Graham Watson’s gallery of pics from the event…check out the full gallery here.

Stage 7, the final stage, was a 7-lap circuit race around a 10.2-mile circuit in Kansas City.  With the peloton facing relentless attacks, including one with five to six riders (depending on the lap) that managed to stay away for a few laps, it was not a ceremonial ride around as are many stage races on their last day.

Garmin used up teammates Saturday and Sunday to keep Zabriskie in the lead, with Will Frischkorn pushing himself to the breaking point on Saturday and Mike Friedman, Jason Donald and Steven Cozza all pushing Sunday’s pace so hard they pulled out before the finish.  Zabriskie finished with just two teammates crossing the finish line on the final lap.

Speaking of the finish line, Canadian Martin Gilbert (Planet Energy) outsprinted Andrew Pinfold (Ouch-Maxxis) and Thor Hushovd (Cervelo) for the stage win.  Hushovd retained the Green Jersey lead, largely uncontested by the end since J.J. Haedo and Mark Cavendish had both previously dropped out of the race.
