Following on his 4th consecutive U.S. Pro Time Trial Championship a few weeks ago (pics on that here), Garmin-Slipstream’s Dave Zabriskie proved yet again that he can own a time trial.  In what’s become standard in this year’s race, his efforts gave him both the stage win and the overall lead. Note the Red, White and Blue colors for National Champion TT (and coincidentally perfect for taking the “W” on 9/11!).
With virtually the entire peloton (and all of the GC contenders) within 20 seconds of race leader J.J. Haedo at the start of the day, the Stage 5 Time Trial of the 2009 Tour of Missouri left a lot up for grabs.  The start order was mixed up since the majority of riders had the same overall time, making for a full day of interesting clock watching.
Tom Zirbel (Bissell), who put in a solid performance to take a temporary lead with a 37:14, watched it quickly get knocked down by Zabriskie with a 36:30 over the 19 mile course through Sedalia, MO. About 40 minutes later, Gustav Larrson (Saxo Bank) eeked out a 37:00 run to push Zirbel to the bottom of the podium.
Zabriskie, who has never won a stage race, said of today’s win and his hopes for an overall victory: “I think the team is very strong and we will be able to defend it.† They’ll have to work a little harder since teammate Christian Vande Velde crashed out early in the race and broke his left hand. Worth noting, Zabriskie’s teammate Ryder Hesjedal won today’s stage at the Vuelta a España.
