Pat McQuaid, President of the International Cycling Union (UCI), stands unopposed for reelection this September, clearing the way for him to be elected onto the International Olympic Committee.

”It is a vote of confidence from the national federations around the world,” Pat McQuaid said in a telephone interview with The New York Times. ”I’m happy that I don’t have to fight what could be a divisive campaign over the next couple of months and I can concentrate on developing a program for the next four years.”

The UCI will vote to confirm his reelection during it’s annual congress this September. Reelection would also pave the way for him to join the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in October. He’s won praise from IOC president Jacques Rogge for pioneering the biological passport program to combat doping. McQuaid says his involvement in the IOC would be important for continued support of the four cycling programs (road, track, mountain biking, BMX) in the Olympics.
