First update in the ongoing saga: Floyd Landis spoke with Neil Brown at Versus and said he went admitted doping and named names in order to gain amnesty for all involved.
How would that work, exactly? Apparently, in exchange for letting everyone off the hook, Landis’ will show the USADA just how easy it is to skirt testing procedures, allowing athletes to continue doping despite the growing presence of testers. His claimed motive is to help the USADA create “better doping controls so future generations of riders would not have to make the same decisions I had to make.”
In the interview, he says that Lance Armstrong made veiled threats to Landis’ then doctor, Dr. Kay, after which Landis emailed the following to Armstrong on May 5:
“As you certainly know I’ve been living with a very complex situation for the last four years and have been, for my own sake and for the sake of my former friends and peers, misleading the public about the truth about performance enhancing drug use in cycling about which I have first-hand knowledge. My only goal in enlightening the public and the press regarding these matters is to clear my conscience and thereafter be able to sleep at night.”
Landis originally sent his admission via email to select officials earlier this year, and it was leaked yesterday to the press.
