IB14: Cinelli Tapers Track Headtubes, Introduces 650B Hobootleg Geo Adventure Touring Mountain Bike

This summer, Cinelli sent Lucas Brunelle across Africa on the 700c Hobo touring bike to prove the bike’s mettle. Now, they’ve added the Hobootleg Geo, a disc brake version that looks to be even more versatile thanks to 650B mountain bike wheels and tires and more mounts. Sadly, these sweet Apidura bags don’t come with.

The frame is totally different, not just to accommodate disc brakes. It’s suspension corrected for a fork and has mountain bike geometry. The frame is Columbus Cromor steel with double butted tubes that are treated inside and out to resist corrosion. There are spots for five water bottle cages, three on the main triangle and one on each side of the fork.

Retail is $1,950 for a complete bike with SRAM X5 2×10 group with FSA Comet 39/26 compact crankset, BB7 mechanical disc brakes, Alex rims with SRAM hubs and Continental tires. It even gets Ergon grips to keep your wrists happy on the long haul.

Reflective bits throughout the bike double as logo and graphical treatment. That hook on the fork is a spoke holder, similar to the one on the chainstays of the original Hobo. Clearance for normal, larger tires is standard, but they say you can still fit a 2.0 in there with full rack and fender kits.

Complete bike weight is claimed at 12.9kg (28.44 pounds), which includes Wellgo pedals and housebrand alloy cockpit parts.

Cinelli’s alloy track bikes all get upgraded to have tapered head tubes, and some have revised geometries. The Mash Parallax, above, is one of them.

The Mash Histogram gets a Garrett Chow approved paint scheme and geometry. The head and seat tubes get a bit steeper and the bottom bracket a bit higher to make it snappy as hell.

The Vigorelli adds the tapered headtube and a seat tube that ovalizes toward the BB to stiffen the frame up. The downtube and stays are all shaped to further increase stiffness, making this their premium track race bike.

The Vigorelli US Limited is a special edition just for the states that matches their jersey and bibs. The kit’s not included, but put ’em together and you’re lookin’ good. Frameset is $799.

The Mash Steel was being called a prototype at the show, but a phone call to Cinelli USA confirmed it’s headed for production.

It’ll keep this raw look, but a few of the details may change. The challenge is getting it down to $800-$850 for the frameset, so some of the etching and fine details may succumb to the accountant’s knife.

This one-off pink and polished frame is an employee’s bike, custom painted and unavailable. Sigh…

2015 bikes are all posted at Cinelli.it now, and Cinelli-USA.com should have them uploaded by early October.

Why does it look like the mash steel has internal cable routing for a rear brake? Because it looks like you can’t put a rear brake on it.

Sad to see their focus is towards fixies and on the Hobo. Wish they pushed and focus more on their road bikes and maybe on their cross bikes.

Glad I’m not the only one scratching my head about that!

Nice looking bike though the person who designed that rack attachment at the crown should be smacked. Really dumb design.

@rincon5 A 30lbs, $2k touring bike is considered glamping? Are you hiking out to the trail barefoot and sleeping on rocks?

The brake bosses are cantilevers and they’re apparently on the underside of the seatstays.

650b wheels on an expedition touring bike is nuts. Good luck finding a rim, spoke or tyre on your world tour when you break it. It needs 26″ to be a serious contender.

I think that Mash steel has to use v-brakes. don’t see where the hanger would go for cantis.
