Zipp has been making their wheels a bit more versatile over the past couple years, adding more clincher and disc brake options and more depths, such that you can likely find something for any type of road-ish build you’re doing. And if you’re willing to settle for alloy rims, they even (finally) have a tubeless ready wheel.
Now, that list of builds can include your track bike thanks to the new Zipp 404 / 808 Firecrest Track wheels with all-new 333 single speed track hubs.
Built with their standard 404 and 808 tubular carbon rims, both are laced with Sapim CX-Ray black spokes and secure-lock nipples. The 404s are laced 2x with 28 spokes per wheel, and the deeper 808s get 2x lacing with 20 spokes up front and 24 in the rear. Pricing, weights and more below…
The 404 rim is 58mm deep and the wheelset comes in at claimed 1,655g. Price is $950 (front – €1,000 / £760) and $1,150 (rear – €1,200 / £920).
The 808s are 82mm deep and have a claimed wheelset weight of 1,805g. Price is $1,100 (front – €1,150 / £880) and $1,300 (rear – €1,350 / £1,040). Both include valve extenders and are available now.
If you have a super narrow frame with tight tire clearance, it’s worth noting (and measuring!) that the rims measure out to 27.5mm (404) and 26.9mm (808) at their widest point.
The new Zipp 333 single speed track hubs use a bolt-on axle with widely spaced flanges that allow for equal tension on both sides to create a strong, stiff wheel. Wheel changes are done with a single 6mm hex wrench.
