It seems as though the folks at Juliana have been listening to the feedback and took what many consider a great pair of bikes, and made them better. With all the little tweaks, it sounds like Santa Cruz has has dialed these bikes for even more stability and fun.

Cruz on through to see what the ladies at Juliana have been up to….

Roubion Hero

The Juliana Roubion is the race bike of choice for the ladies of the Juliana-SRAM Pro Team, who test its capabilities in the Enduro World Series. For 2016, Juliana wanted a more aggressive, 66º head angle to make the Roubion more stable when descending at speed. They increased the top tube length to accommodate the use of shorter stems, and the chainstays have been pulled in a little to keep the rear end tight and quick through technical hairpins. The seat tube angle’s also a degree steeper, putting the rider right above the bottom bracket a little more to improve pedaling efficiency and traction on even the most technical climbs. The 150mm of VPP travel features an entirely new set of links. The lower link is hidden completely out of the way, and the upper link mounts directly to the top tube to increase stiffness and bearing life. This also causes the shock rate to be a little softer initially, improving small bump compliance. They also smoothed out the mid-stroke of the rear suspension by making it a bit more progressive, so you’ll feel confident and composed when going gets tough in rockier conditions.

Furtado Profile

The Furtado is their trail bike now with 130mm of travel, up from 125mm on the previous version. They made similar changes to the Furtado as the Roubion with a slightly slacker 67º head angle, improved VPP (Virtual Pivot Point) design giving it a lower standover height, and a slightly longer top tube to warrant the use of a shorter stem for more responsive handling. The chainstays on the Furtado are 10mm shorter, which results in snappier handling and quicker acceleration.  Like on the Roubion, the Furtado has a more progressive suspension curve, giving the rider the support and feedback they desire on technical terrain. One of the great not so big improvements is the introduction of an extra-small size in early 2016. This alone really opens the door for many that have trouble finding a bike of this caliber in their size and its nice to see their voices finally being heard.

“Let’s put a sticker on it and call it a women’s bike”

I guess that this means that the corresponding Santa Cruz models will see these geometry changes as well, since the cost of making new molds for Juliana alone might well be prohibitively expensive.

^ “prohibitively expensive” or not, it is inadequate to just slap a sticker on a bike and call it woman’s model. LIV makes bikes for women.

Why again do women need different bikes? They have different spec on the bikes and different sizes (Juliana has XS Santa Cruz does not) that are better suited for women but I don’t thin women need a different frame. I see a lot of women on SC bikes already.

@steve Many women have shorter torso and longer legs than men of the same height. This can make fitting a bike properly a nightmare. A true womens bike will have a different frame with shorter reach and a higher stack to accommodate this. Not all women need it but for the ones who do it can be revolutionary. Unfortunately companies like Yeti and SC just rebadge their mens bikes and resell them as women which muddies the waters of the womens MTB market. Especially when some companies (Trek, Giant, and Specialized come to mind) Actually put effort into their womens lineups.

Many men need shorter TT and longer ST as well. Call them what they are, a slightly different size bike for people that need a slightly different size. As to the juliana brand, dumb. They are just different paint jobs. If you are going to do something then dont half a$$ it.

Neat photos. Shows a pretty good looking fit. Also reminded me that I wish shorts were a bit longer in the inseam and waistbands a bit lower. Don’t like the gap of flesh that shows between knee pads and the shorts and don’t like how the crotch of the shorts hang 2″ lower, when waistband rests just above my hips. Wouldn’t mind the option of having lighter rebound tunes on the suspension from the factory either, which might appeal to those that don’t weigh as much as the average American male.

I think what pfs is indicating is that there is more variance in people within a gender than there is variance between the genders. So it’s weird that we have a “short torso” bike and call it a women’s bike. This same thing happens in footwear all the time.
