Saris Powertap Disc brake power meter hubs

2015 was a big year for PowerTap, having introduced a power measurement device for all parts of the bike. In addition to their original hubs, they introduced the P1 Power Meter Pedals and C1 Power Meter Chainring-and-Spider combo early in the year. Then they added a new disc brake version of the G3 in the summer.

Now, the G3 and GS hubs will start at just $599 beginning January 1, 2016. That’s a $190 discount off the hub itself, and similar savings should be seen on complete wheels, too. Virtually all hubs will now ship with their updated dual-band transmitter, which connects to both ANT+ and Bluetooth cycling computers or smartphones. The Dual Band end cap is also available separately as an upgrade for existing G3 and GS hub owners.

PowerTap claims a +/-1.5% accuracy rate on their hubs and, with last year’s gram reduction, a very competitively weighted way to add power measurement to your bike.

I need an ant+ stem to measure how bored I am while staring down at it.

This power metering never appealed to me, until I realized they could make a meter showing how hard I’m braking with the front wheel.

There’s something to take pride in.

Calvin,
Their J-bend spoke disc mtb hub comes in 32hole. Just their straight pull version does not.

“Virtually all hubs will now ship with their updated dual-band transmitter, which connects to both ANT+ and Bluetooth cycling computers or smartphones.”

This was the thing that put me off the PT hubs in the past. (And is why I don’t own a Quarq.) Chipsets with dual BT/ANT+ support have been available for a three or four years now, and I think it’s completely asinine that there are vendors outside Garmin that refuse to support both protocols, especially when it comes to substantial investment items like powermeters.

I remember when a PT SLC was 3200USD here in Australia back in 2009.

@ Durianrider, that is crazy, they cost more than an SRM! Were there just huge import tariffs or distributor margins or what?

That’s a pretty damned good price when you consider that cheaper power meters are generally just measuring power on one side.

@John If you are serious about power you would avoid BT at all cost! Bluetooth is a consumer standard where Ant+ is more of a professional transmission protocol. I have never lost my Ant+ connection! I can not say the same about BT which drops a ton!

I want a cycling news source to build a bike with ALL the power meter types: Hub, pedal, crank, spider, and compare the readings under the same exact effort.

Because science.

chadquest DCrainmaker does stuff like that on the regular. Guy tests a truly tremendous amount of gear.

BT is ASS in general, and ASS in particular when it comes to bikes. The ONLY reason to use BT is because you’re too cheap to buy a proper cycling computer, and want to run stuff to your phone.

I’ve never understood the Bluetooth powermeter thing. You’re spending hundreds to over a thousand on a power meter and want to hook it up to a phone that won’t last more than 4 hours with the GPS enabled? Also, before getting a power meter, a decent cycling computer is usually a preceding investment.

I’m looking to buy a Suunto watch (ambit3 or Spartan Ultra). Both of these watches are BLE only. That’s why I would like a DUAL compatibility (to futureproof my purchase)
