2015 Orbea Oiz M20 mountain bike long term review and actual weights

Orbea wants to give their customers and dealers alike the confidence that they stand behind their products by offering an Orbea Extended warranty on all bikes purchased after January 11, 2016… for free. In addition to offering a lifetime warranty on the frame, the extended warranty also includes upping the paint warranty and there is even an accident replacement policy thrown in.

Head past the break for details and what you may have to do for the first time ever…

Orbea’s Extended Warranty includes increasing the standard (by law) 2-year warranty to lifetime, covering frames & rigid forks against breaking and/or cracks. They will also extend the protection against any paint, varnish and corrosion defects on the product from two to three years, and to top it off, the customer will be privy to a substantial “Accident Policy Service” that offers discounts between 30 – 50% on a replacement depending on the age of the frame.

To get the Orbea Extended Warranty, you have to *better sit down* register your bike within 30 days of purchase. We’ve seen those little tear out cards in our user manuals for years and even that easy to click link on their websites, but alas, they go untouched. Orbea is changing that. Well, if you want the free Extended Lifetime Warranty, that is. To qualify, you have to register your bike within 30 days after the purchase. To help, they’ve made it pretty simple by including a serial number registration process. Each bike comes with an information card with a QR code that includes all of the bike’s information and serial number. It even has a little wallet friendly punch out that you can keep with you if you use the Costanza organization technique. There is a pre-registration step (I believe it is done at the point of purchase), that sends the customer an email to complete the registration at home to get the process rolling because otherwise, it will be filed in the “I won’t do it in time” bin.

My experience as a dealer was their previous lifetime warranty was worthless to the point of laughable. Cracked frames, exceptionally poor paint & clearcoat quality, to mention a couple issues we routinely had to deal with (for customers)… After witnessing Orbea USA tap dance around obvious issues, and failing to burn a single calorie for customers, we, as a dealer, walked away from the brand.
All I see here is a PR exercise…with Orbea playing the odds that the registration rate will end up being relatively low. And for the percentage of people who do register their frames…Good Luck if your frame develops issues.

I actually had the opposite experience. I had an Orca that developed a crack in the top tube and Orbea was good about sending out a replacement after some verification of the warranty claim.

That sounds like the same crack a buddy of mine had…same bike too. They said he clamped the top tube which NEVER happened because he never works on his own bike and nobody at my shop would ever think of doing that either. It wasn’t much of a crack but enough to be unsafe. I’m sure he wouldn’t have purchased that bike either if he knew that they wouldn’t cover things that were their fault and apparently his problem

I’ve also had exceptionally good service from Orbea. I had my Alma frame replaced 2 times in 5 years. Once was a wreck where the externally routed cable hung on something and ripped out a cable mount that was riveted into the frame, leaving a hole. I rode the replacement for a couple years and found a hairline crack (maybe only paint) behind the bottom bracket. Sent it back and had another new frame within a week.

Yup, I know they avoid honoring warranties at all costs. As a seller, I’ve seen it happen with their “lifetime” and short warranty on multiple occasions… I’m talking obvious warranties that weren’t due to normal use.
I love their bikes but this keeps me from EVER buying one.

it sounds like Orbea is just trying to keep up with the big players who have always had lifetime warranties. Too little, too late?

Had an Orca that broke 2 miles into its first ride, they denied the claim. Dealer dropped the brand!

I thought US law prohibited mandatory registration for warranties?
