We first saw Bontrager adopt MIPS technology into their helmets at their Trek World dealer event in August and now they’re available. Given the potential safety benefits, it’s no surprise to see Bontrager add it to a range of their helmets to cover most riding styles. What is surprising are the very reasonable price points.

If you don’t recall hearing of the Multi-directional Impact Protection System, you might have not been using it the last time you rung your bell. In short, MIPS lets the helmet’s outer shell “rotate” independently of the inner shell that is attached to your noggin. MIPS re-directs the forces of an impact sideways rather than directly to the head reducing the direct and rotational impact to the brain. At the cost of a slight increase in the helmet’s mass, the MIPS’s safety feature far out-weighs a couple of ounces.
