MIPS crash

We first saw Bontrager adopt MIPS technology into their helmets at their Trek World dealer event in August and now they’re available. Given the potential safety benefits, it’s no surprise to see Bontrager add it to a range of their helmets to cover most riding styles. What is surprising are the very reasonable price points.

Check out the new MIPS helmets from Bontrager and the video for a visual on how it works…

If you don’t recall hearing of the Multi-directional Impact Protection System, you might have not been using it the last time you rung your bell. In short, MIPS lets the helmet’s outer shell “rotate” independently of the inner shell that is attached to your noggin. MIPS re-directs the forces of an impact sideways rather than directly to the head reducing the direct and rotational impact to the brain. At the cost of a slight increase in the helmet’s mass, the MIPS’s safety feature far out-weighs a couple of ounces.

The Starvos MIPS road helmet ($89.99), has an in-mold composite skeleton and the “Headmaster” fit system keeping it well vented and snug. It comes in women’s (top L), white, high-vis yellow and black.

Their Solstice ($59.99) comes in at a good price for their do-it-all helmet. It gets thier one-handed Micro-Manager II fit system and a design that’s at home on the road, the dirt and everywhere in between. Available in black, blue, orange and white.

The Bontrager Rally MIPS helmet ($119.99) offers a little more protective coverage for those putting themselves between a rock and a hard place often. Coming in blue, black and green, the MIPS in this lid may hold the highest value.

On top of putting MIPS in some of their helmets, Bontrager pretty much makes buying any of their helmets risk free. First, their 30-day comfort guarantee lets you return it if you’re not happy with it no questions asked and, even better, they also come with a 1-year crash replacement guarantee. If you crash within the first year of owning it, they’ll replace it for FREE!

im wondering why MIPS isnt standard everywhere if its so good.

im saying that having a MIPS helmet myself. it doesnt seem to be a lot to add to the construction of the helmet (its a thin plastic shell that slides on rails in 2 directions- that’s all !)

It’s great to see MIPS coming down in price points. I own the Rally and it’s a great helmet, especially given the price.

I have the Lithos and it fits like the Rally, but when trying on MIPS Rally the thin sheath completely ruined the fit for me. Other helmet brands still fit great with minor adjustments between the MIPS and non. Just a heads-up (no pun intended).

I don’t understand why everyone is jumping on the MIPS bandwagon. There is no definitive evidence that the system has any real benefit in reducing concussion forces during a crash. The whole idea is based on a theory but cannot actually be proven without giving a bunch of people serious head trauma, which of course will never happen. MIPS just had good marketing to begin with then Bell/Giro became a stake holder in the company and it really took off from there. I’m actually quite surprised a consumer group of some kind has come after MIPS and all of the helmet companies using it for false advertising.

@Andy…you might want to do a little bit more (or any) research on the subject. The studies used to develop this certification, and the resultant licensing and applications for helmets dates back to the mid-90’s. That’s a lot of helmet testing data using state-of-the-art equipment along with concussion research to determine what causes head trauma, and how to lessen the forces that cause it.

BTW, you can test helmets without using live subjects. Sound science, peer-reviewed testing, and repeatable results are why consumer groups applaud, rather than go after, this system.

Dan, MIPS is not a certification, it’s a product. The only certification for bike helmets in the U.S. is CPSC which has yet to give an opinion on MIPS. MIPS really gained traction when Bicycling Magazine published an article on the idea in a 2013 issue. That article was later deemed to be misleading by multiple groups but the public perception of MIPS and its effectiveness had already become ingrained. So maybe it is YOU who needs to do a little research as I have actually done quite a bit. Here is one of the articles for reference. http://www.bhsi.org/mips.htm. My original curiosity about MIPS was actually sparked when a Bell/Giro employee told me at a demonstration they can’t actually definitively says that MIPS decreases the likelihood of getting a concussion when involved in a crash but it’s where the market trend was heading so they were buying in big time. It’s just marketing man, sorry.

As far as whether or not you can test for differences in whether or not MIPS helps with reducing concussions, which is what it is claimed to do, you absolutely cannot. You’d have to have somebody in an MRI machine while they got in a cycling accident. Don’t believe the hype Dan, that’s all it is.

MIPS is totally marketing driven. If it is so great they’d put them in motorcycle helmets.
