Wide, light, and tubeless Specialized Roval CLX 32 wheelset makes its debut alongside new Roubaix

The new Roubaix might have stolen the show at the launch, but the new Roval wheels are not to be missed. Specifically, the new CLX 32 wheels which were fitted to our test bikes for the duration of our time in Belgium and France. Considering that the new Roubaix is built around bigger tires with clearance for 32mm rubber and even a lower BB to accommodate them, a wheelset like Roval CLX 32s is right at home.

Claimed to be the lightest in their class, the wheels look like they check off a lot of boxes and could be the perfect big tire wheelset for you regardless of your ride…

Named the CLX 32 for their rim profile, the 32mm deep carbon rim boasts a 20.7mm inner rim width. That’s enough to make the 28mm S-Works tires we were riding measure out to 30mm. The rims are also 2Bliss tubeless compatible and use Roval plastic plugs for the spoke holes to seal the rim bed. Special attention was also paid to the aerodynamics of the rim as you would expect from a company that has their own wind tunnel on site, with the rims claiming an 8 second advantage over the CLX 40 on a 40k time trial.

Offered in disc or rim brake models, the CLX 32 disc is claimed to be the lightest in its class at 1,340g per set. The rim brake models are even lighter at 1,280g. On the disc brake models, the Roval AFD1 hubs use Centerlock rotors and include CeramicSpeed bearings and end caps to fit standard QR or 12×100 and 12x142mm thru axles. Built with 21 spokes in the front and 24 spokes in the rear, each using a 2:1 lacing pattern with DT Swiss Aerocomp/Aerolite spokes and Pro Lock nipples, the wheels include a Roval padded wheelbag, steel QR, both sets of end caps, and Roval tubeless plugs and tubeless vavles – all for $2,400 or the set.

Our time on the CLX 32s was quite enjoyable, and while the ride of the bulbous 28mm tires was certainly beneficial to the ride quality of the Roubaix, more impressive was the complete lack of flats in our group as we tried to push the bikes through the mine field of cobbles.

These look much nicer than the wide ENVEs to me. Better weight ratio, better internal width (more realistic / 32C is a great size for all around riding imo, and these are prolly fine for up to 40C anyway)

And it seems like everyone is finally jumping on the tubeless bandwagon, makes me wonder why it took so long. I can’t remember my last flat. 3, 4 years ago? (basically when i switched)

Now the only issue remaining is 2400USD for wheels is rather steep these days 😉

Look if you’ve got a bike that uses SCS you’re dead in the water. Specialized wants nothing to do with you or their flakey SCS bikes. You need to go and buy one of their new bikes.

These could be well worth considering. Nothing said here about the freehub, but those sure look like DT endcaps, so there could be a Star Ratchet inside.

Has Spez said with what tire width these have the aero advantage- and if the 8s time difference came with same-sized tires, or with the tires for which each wheelset was intended?

Sorry- answered my own question. According to Specialized, these were optimized around a 26mm tire. Hardly thin, but not the 30ish that I had in mind

There is most definitely a star ratchet in those hubs. Yes, DT Swiss tech in them.

If you’ve been paying attention since the 80’s, this is quite possibly the most Roval looking wheel set since the bully brand bought them. I still won’t buy them.

Me neither. I’d rather buy wheels from a smaller company that, like every other small company, wants to be a big company someday, because smaller companies run on granola, patchouli oil, incense, and love, and are all 501(c) whom give their profits away to soup kitchens.

I support that, and not the big bully brands whose only goal is to make a profit and return on investment. How dare they.

Today, put 35 clx on my 9 MO old 2016 Spec Roubaix udi2. 24mm S works turbo clinchers Tires measured 26mm with 100psi. Saved 1.3 lbs over stock wheels/tires! Haven’t ridden yet.

Have seen a few of these pass through the shop… test ride on a repair /upgrade and new rbx pro. Very impressed with feel and quality. Rim brakes worked great. Tires mounted easily.. did not set either up tubeless. . Yet…

Just bought these wheel and did tubeless S works 26 tires. Wow. Coming from zipp 202 CL which I liked very much it feels like an upgrade. These spin sooo smooth and quick acceleration. I will do some races in these without a doubt. I am very particular and these impress. Roll silently on free wheel which is very stealth when following wheels.

Sound good, how’s the braking, as there doesn’t appear to be any special texture to the tcktrack?

Braking in the dry is as good as zipps which I thought worked fine. Did some fast group rides with climbing and descents and was good enough that I forgot about comparing. However, Zipps braking was poor when wet and I have yet to compare these in poor weather. They feel faster at speed and rolling but I think the zipps were maybe a tiny bit stiffer under hard acceleration but could be in my head.

Interesting they’re the equal of the Zips in the dry – which generally seem to have a good reputation for dry carbon braking – be good to hear your experiences in the wet too. If they hold up that’d make them a fantastic all round wheel in my opinion No doubt the ceramic speed bearings contribute to the fast rolling I guess.
