Over the past couple trade shows, Panaracer has shown prototypes of several new tires for gravel along with a brown (skinwall) casing option for the standard GravelKing. Now, they’ve finally put several of them into production, offering similar tread patterns for the new GravelKing Mud (left) and RegaCross cyclocross tire. The differences between the two are in the casings, with the ‘cross version being tubeless ready.

The RegaCross comes in 33mm and 35mm widths with weights of 360g and 410g, respectively. They have a folding bead with Panaracer’s AX-Alpha material in the casing, which is a tightly woven, fine gauge material that remains very flexible while deflecting cuts and scrapes. The GravelKing Mud gets the same two sizes, meaning it’ll basically work as a tube-type cyclocross tire, too, and comes in black and brown sidewall options. Weights are 300g and 360g. It uses the same tread compound and AX-Alpha material with the addition of their anti-snakebite/flat protection layer. The tread design takes a little different approach to mud, using longer knobs that should help with lateral grip and flinging mud loose in a straight line, but without the usual paddle shapes or spiky knobs found on some other mud designs.

Love Panaracer tires, and all their OEM stuff from Soma, Compass, and SimWorks. However, naming of parts, tires, or bikes ‘Gravel’ anything needs to be eliminated from cycling vernacular.

Why?

Agree, ive cog a pair of <Compass Bon John Pass Extralights – super supple, lovely, leightweight, lots of milage and ultralow rolling resistance with tons of grip.

Just swapped them for a pair of Gravelking SK 40mm – love them too, all the craacteristics from the Extralight except from weight. Still resonable lightweight for its huge size (43mm on 17mm internal rim) and the tubeles capability is really impressive – rideable all the way down to 2.1 bars – thats MTB teritory. Performs quite well on paved surfaces too.

No it doesn’t.

Looks like it’d make a particularly nice front tire with the longer knobs, kind of reminiscent of the old “Dart” MTB tire.

Panaracer always makes good stuff, although they do need to specifically add ‘Gravel’ to more product names.

I’m with you. I love the gravel name and I hope it’s used a lot more. I also hope that tarmac will be called tar gravel and cement ‘lime gravel’.

I want the words grave and grovel to be changed to gravel.

And in the immortal words of the Hamburglar, “Gravel, gravel.”

Dear Panaracer,

Where is the 650b x 48 Gravel King?

And what is the difference between the Gravel King 650b tires and the Pari-Moto 650b’s?

And where can we get the tubeless-compatible Cannondale TRS tires? Your name is on the sidewall after all.

The answer is the WTB Horizon tires.

I’ve got RIBMOs on my old commuter, TServs on my canal path bike, and a Fire Pro on my MTB all of them are durable and have great traction. I even set up the TServs tubeless even though they are tubeless specific, they don’t leak down too bad and it allows me to run nice comfy pressures. Plus I’ve been using their tubulars on customer bikes at my shop and haven’t had a come back yet.

I just ordered mine this week. Excited to give them a whirl for the remainder of the cx season! cannot wait to see how tight the tubeless seat is at lower pressures.
