Want a trail helmet that looks great, is high tech and affordable? The Kali Lunati checks all those boxes and packs in some user-friendly features to boot.

Designed with XC and trail use in mind, it’s constructed using their Composite Fusion inmolding, which wraps a section of the polycarbonate shell around on the inside, too. The helmet comes with bug-netted padding and integrated accessory (light, camera, etc.) mount and retails for just $80. Interested?

One of the more impressive features is the range of adjustment. I was able to wear it with a normal beanie underneath on cold days (which easily added 3-4mm of padding all around) and during warmer months with my short summer haircut. The micro-adjust dial on the back cinched up the slack in both cases, and it opens wide enough to easily pull over a thick base layer. And this is on a S/M size…I normally wear a Medium in Specialized/Giro/Bell helmets for reference.

It has 25 well placed vents that did a great job of heat management. I’ve ridden this in summer heat and near freezing temps and, with a beanie on the colder ends of that, worked great across the entire year.

The rear drops to offer extended coverage compared to their XC-oriented Maraka helmet (also one of my favorites), and the straps and retention system on this one are much friendlier to long sunglasses arms than the Maraka. Mine weighed in at 326g (claimed is 286g), with the breakaway visor installed (it comes that way) and no accessories attached to the mount on top. Speaking of, the mount is very sleek and virtually invisible if you don’t have anything attached to it.

Basically, the Lunati has become my go-to helmet for most rides. It looks good, is super comfortable and stays in place even on rough trails. It comes in four colors, including a blue that would’ve matching the Alpinestars shorts and Pivot bike in these pics, but the black is all black and goes with everything. I highly recommend the Kali Lunati to anyone looking for a great mountain bike helmet that just happens to come at a great price.
