Been reading our Suspension Tech series and want to fiddle with your volume spacers but worried you’ll strip, scratch or damage your fork’s top cap with all that on-and-off? No problem, at least if you’ve got a Fox fork, now that they’re offering model-specific top cap sockets designed with no lead in chamfer to maximize the contact patch and ensure tight, secure connections. The outside surface is knurled for solid finger contact, too, even if you’ve got a little grease on your tips. Retail is $25 each.

If you’re diving a little deeper down the maintenance rabbit hole, their new Delrin Seal Drivers are designed to push new fork slider seals straight and even. They guide the seal directly into the fork’s body for a quick, perfect install. These run $30 and are offered in four sizes to fit each of their four stanchion diameters.

These tools may help because their new seals are literally impossible to install.

I’d really like to see all fork top caps changed so that you only need a cassette tool like the new Pike (and others historically). A little standardization would go a long ways.

A metric sized socket is way more standard than a cassette tool.

he mostly meant “a tool you already require anyway”
theres a lot of metric sockets to form a set. infinite, nearly.

My problem is I have standard metric sockets but forks don’t have standard height metric nuts for top caps – they have very slim flats and the standard socket has a rounded edge so doesn’t get a good purchase on them.

Sockets without chamfered edges are not a common tool.

Buy a normal socket and grind it flat until the chamfer is gone. problem solved

A tip for helping install seals

Toss the seals in the freezer ahead of time and pull them out only when its time to press them into the fork. The cold will shrink the seal making it easier to install. You might be able to get them in by hand but a press still helps

Have you tried to install the new “low friction” Fox seals with the metal in them? They are a bit different than the other seals I’ve dealt with.

Piloted seal drivers are where its at. Lots of options on the market now – unior, abbey, push, fox, real world cycling. Makes installing the flangeless seals nice and simple.
