Choose the blue box for better bike shipping from Bikeflights

When you ship your bike, it’s gotta be packed well. Whether sending your bike to your vacation or your next race, shipping your bike (especially with a service like Bikeflights) remains one of the primary ways to get it there. But when it comes to shipping, there are certain restrictions to the size of the container which often requires sourcing a beat up box from your local bike shop, or buying one of the cardboard shipping boxes from companies like Bikeflights. To provide a more durable, longer lasting alternative, Bikeflights has a new Blue box that will help keep your bike safe in transit, and save some space in your garage between trips…

Made from a water resistant Coroplast, the Blue box is similar to their current cardboard box, but is designed to last much longer. Measuring 43 x 11 x 32, the box meets FedEx and UPS domestic size requirements and is under the 130″ cutoff for the lower shipping rates. Featuring a locking tab design that eliminates the need for additional external straps, the box should be taped up with standard packing tape. Inside you’ll find a bungee system to keep the bike centered in the box, as well as a full complement of axle spacers for 100, 110, 120, 126, 130, 135, 142, and 148mm. When you’re not using it, the box can be collapsed and stored away, and is said to be big enough when built to fit many bikes with larger tires and longer suspension. The only catch is that the Blue box is quite a bit more expensive than the $39.95 cardboard box, at $199.95 plus $20 shipping. However, it is reusable and the peace of mind that you won’t find a big hole punched into the side of your frame on arrival may be worth it…

+1. It’ll feed a hippy organic kale and farm fresh sticks for a week.

Very slightly less than a second hand EVOC bag. Quite a lot more than a box from the LBS and some duct tape.

Kind of wondering who they are selling this to. If I’m gonna spend that much, I’ll either spend a bit more for a good, new, bag/case or find a used one. Otherwise I’ll just go into my shop and pick up a box and packing material for free. I suspect there may be a few areas that don’t have that luxury, and at least the option is there if someone needs it.

having packed more than a few bikes in every kind of box, the EVOC is by FAR the most well thought out, easiest to load and other than a full hard case, toughest way to ship a bike. I would pay double this stupid price for a used EVOC that will last for dozens of trips. Or go free route (could throw mech a 6 pack?!) bike shop cardboard and a new roll of packing tape to toughen it up with. Hmmmm, free box, $7 for a roll of good packing tape and off to the FedEx shipping store. What stupid expensive shit is next? putting a $5 rubber inner tube inside a rubber outer tire when all one needs is .25c in liquid latex that will seals dozens of little holes and maybe even a bigger one or two….

I’m sure this is among the nicer semi-disposable boxes but $200 is slightly overpriced. If it was $100-$150 I think it might be a bit easier to stomach.

I suspect the market for these is is made up of people who are traveling on short notice; people that don’t know there are other bike box/bike bag options; or people that rarely travel with their bike, are content with something that after use can be stored in the garage, and who are happy with the convenience of getting a box from their bike shipper.

Their shipping prices are excellent, but I agree with the majority here.

Bags are nice for pedaling from and back to the remote airport. But many airlines require a hard case – probably for good reason.

I’m building similar to this blue box now, only convertible. It will fold up into a 33″ x 12″ x 4″ bundle with little wheels near each end. I’ve three of them in the works for my upcoming MTB trip to Mexico.

Imagine walking out of the airport with your box and assembling your bike and riding to your lodging with your box bundled on your back below your pack like a sleeping mat. Then reverse the process returning to the airport. Avoid car rides altogether. Think Puerto Vallarta, where travel by bike is nearly the same duration as by car.

The material is not cheap and $200 is about what I’d expect for a production box. My version would cost double if I could put a value to my time. I won’t build to sell, but if interested in making your own, maybe consider using 3M Duralock, and make it easy for the TSA inspection with extra zip ties inside.
