CleverStandard has expanded their bicycle tool lineup beyond the quick-link-opening tire levers with the new Chain Barrel, which breaks a link on anything from 6-speed to 12-speed chains. The part is small, easily nestling in a corner of your saddle bag, jersey pocket or hydration pack. And it comes in colors and is probably the easiest to use chain breaker you’ve ever seen…
Colors include red, gold, green, blue and purple, or stick with classic black. The design locks the chain into position inside the barrel, then a safety cap threads into place to keep everything held tight. Compare this to traditional chain breakers that simply capture the links on small teeth and allow the chain to come off as you torque the tool. And it combines with their tire lever to give you more leverage:
This makes it easier to use, even for small hands, kids, etc.
Not included, it’s shown here with a prototype bar end plug that’ll allow it to mount like this:
They’re still working on that part, but the Chain Barrel is available now. It’s 43mm long with an 18mm diameter, and claimed weight is 46 grams.
The chain pin is guaranteed for life, and it comes with two CleverStandard tire levers, the Chain Barrel and express shipping to the U.S. for $48. Normal retail should be around $20 for just the Chain Barrel once a U.S. distributor is locked down.
