Light & Motion gave us a sneak peek of the new Rando 500 earlier this year at Frostbike, and one little detail really stood out. Supposedly, the light could be charged while riding by a dynamo front hub. That’s fairly uncommon for lights of this type, but L&M has confirmed it with their latest blanket release. Light & Motion confirms Rando dynamo charging, intros Urban 1000, Seca 2000 Race, & Vis Micro II

Rando 500

Along with the impressive 500 lumen output for just $79.99, the light can be trickle charged with a dynamo hub equipped with a USB output. However, L&M points out that this can only be done while in the low or pulse mode when simultaneously charging and in use. Because of this, the light will automatically adjust to either of these modes when charging. They also point out that the battery status indicator needs a 500mA draw for accurate reading.

Key features

  • 500 Lumen output certified to the FL-1 Standard
  • Firmware allows light to be used while charging; ideal for dynamo setups
  • Accurate 4-level battery charge status indicator
  • Amber side lighting for a full 180 degrees of visibility
  • Custom engineered reflector optimizes the light to provide the most efficient and effective distribution of light for cycling.
  • High capacity Li-Ion battery optimized for charging on the go
  • Micro USB Rechargeable
  • Multiple power settings
    • High: 3 hours/500 lumens
    • Med: 4 hours/250 lumens

Urban 1000

Along with the Rando 500, L&M is launching a more affordable version of the Urban 1000 Fast Charge with the Urban 1000. It still offers a powerful 1000 lumens on high, but eliminates the 2A fast charge capability, so the light will take 6 hours to fully charge. Offered in two colors, Trooper and Ridgetop, the lights sell for $90 or $50 less than the Fast Charge version.

Key features

  • 1000 lumen output certified to the FL-1 Standard
  • Waterproof to 1 meter for all conditions reliability
  • Use with available GoPro mount adapter to connect with any GoPro Mounting option.
  • Custom engineered reflector optimizes the light to provide a smooth, even beam pattern that focuses the light where you need it.
  • Beam pattern was engineered to maximize riders’ depth perception using optics that eliminates the snowball effect with a clean transition across the beam.
  • Amber side lighting for a full 180 degrees of visibility
  • SafePulse mode
  • Traffic mode allows a simple toggle between high and medium modes only to quickly adjust output
  • Designed to be mounted on your handlebar or with optional helmet mount (tool-free system)
  • Micro USB Rechargeable (fully charges in 6 hours)
  • Accurate battery status indicator with low battery warning and auto shut-off to prevent damage
  • Multiple power settings.
    • High: 1.5 hours/1000 lumens
    • Med: 3 hours/500 lumens
    • Low: 6 hours/250 lumens
    • SafePulse: 12 hours/500 lumens
  • System weight: 121 grams
  • MSRP: $89.99

Seca 2000 Race

I’ve been using a Seca 2200 Enduro for awhile now and have to say it’s one of my favorite trail lights. It’s proven to be incredibly durable, the beam pattern is much improved and more usable with fewer hot spots, and the updated lower profile light with its band or GoPro style mount is much better for helmet mounting. Now the 2200 has been upgraded to the 2500, but Light & Motion is going the other way as well with the new Seca 2000 Race.

Using the same profile as the other lights, the Seca 2000 drops the price substantially and still offers an incredible 2000 lumens on high with a 1.5hr run time out of the smaller 3 cell battery. All this for $280.

Key features

  • 2000 Lumen Output Certified to the FL-1 Standard
  • A 4 LED array using the highest-level CREE LEDs and enhanced firmware.
  • Custom engineered reflector optimizes the light to provide a smooth, even beam pattern with a wide, far-reaching spread of light that focuses the light where you need it.
  • Beam pattern was engineered to maximize riders’ depth perception with optics that eliminate the snowball effect, without wasting any light.
  • Secondary Race Mode simplifies your settings to switch between high power with 1.5 hours run time and low power with 3 hours.
  • Universal tool-free mounting system.
  • Helmet Mount and GoPro Interface Included
  • Recharge the 3 Cell Li-ion battery in 2.5 hours with the Mini-L 1.5 Charger
  • Low battery warning and auto shut-off to prevent damage
  • Multiple power settings with cruise and secondary race mode
  •        o High: 1.5 hours/2000 lumens
    o Med: 3 hours/1000 lumens
    o  Low: 6 hours/500 lumens
    o  Pulse: 12 hours/500 lumens
    o  Race High: 1.5 hours/2000 lumens
    o Race Low: 3 hours/1000 lumens
  • System weight: 355 grams
  • MSRP: $280

Vis Micro II

Finally, L&M is adding a new option to their Vis series with the new Micro II. About 2/3 the size of the Vis 180 Pro, the Micro II cranks out 60 lumens from a body that weighs 61g, and will provide between 3 and 20 hours of illumination depending on the mode.

Key features

  • 60 lumen output certified to the FL-1 Standard
  • SafePulse proven to maximize visibility by aiding in a driver’s depth perception of cyclist to safely locate and overtake
  • Engineered with the highest level of CREE LED and enhanced firmware
  • Accurate battery status indicator
  • Custom engineered reflectors and optical solutions optimize the red and amber light a complete protection from the rear and side
  • Secondary LEDs spread amber light for high-contrast side visibility

    • Lo SafePulse: 10 hours/30 lumens
    • Solid: 3 hours/25 lumens
    • Paceline: 20 hours/3 lumens
  • Ultralight system weight: 61 grams

Does that mean you have to get a dynamo hub to usb converter in addition to the Rando light? If that is the case it does not seem all that impressive. Basically they just made a light that can be on low and pulse and charge at the same time.

I doubt this is the first USB light to work with dynamos, but if nothing else matters to you, it’s probably one of the best. The target market, though, is right there in the name: Rando.

Randonneurs have a dyno-powered headlight, but they can use this as a no-drag primary on steep roads, a secondary on dark roads, and off the road altogether for repairs, etc. Less to pack, less to push.

I think the off road crowd, like folks racing the Colorado Trail Race, where you often have to walk your bike for hours up hella steep climbs over 12,000ft and a dynamo does nothing, are who will really enjoy this light. Charge during the day and on the DHs, use this for night time hike a bikes.

I think I’ve got my plan for this July.

This isn’t new information but if you’re looking at a compact headlight. The L&M urban series is absolutely fantastic I have a Urban 900 and a Lezyne 1100xl and my old Urban 500 beats the pants off the Lezyne 1100 lumen light. The optics of the urban series are awesome albeit I do wish they’d make it easier for users to replace the batteries.

I love the current quick march of lighting technology. A few years back Exposure had a version of the Diabolo with roughly the same specs as the Urban 1000. Then it cost over $250. Today those specs are $90 from L&M. Or you can get a 2000 lumen light for about the price of a 1000 lumen light a few years ago. Nice.

The Rando is barely news for anyone that uses a dynamo hub. When’s the DYNAMO POWERED light coming out? It would look great to have a pair of matching lights.

Now if Light & Motion could produce a light that doesn’t die after a few years, that would be great… Every light I’ve purchased has failed, while in use, rather unexpectedly… Not to mention the little rubber bits always fall off. I love the product when it’s working. It’s some of the best, but, honestly that isn’t saying much when it comes to these products.
