Based in Switzerland, new tire maker Ere Research has set out to design a full range of premium performance tubeless road tires for any surface. We caught a first glimpse at their Tenaci gravel race & Omnia all around road racing treads in Berlin, and they look promising. Updated with tire weights.
Ere Tenaci gravel road race tire
Ere was founded by cycling industry design veteran Piet van der Velde who has start up his own product development since mid 2017. Now that the first suite of tires are ready, we’ve started to get a look at some of the high performance highlights.
The Tenaci is dubbed Ere’s gravel racing and adventure touring tire. It uses a fast rolling, but still grippy center file tread design, flanked by a more open but tightly packed set of shoulder knobs.
Ere wanted a tire to provide a solid grip for riding dirt and gravel roads, but this is still meant to be a race tire so it needed to stay fast rolling. The tires we spotted were a prototype 60a durometer rubber and 120tpi tubeless, but Ere has since settled on a slightly harder 65a compound that balances grip with long wearing.
The Tenaci is 700c only and is available in 30, 32, 36 & 40mm widths. It retails at £67.50/75€ for tubeless or £63/70€ for clinchers (including setup accessories). The tire gets bead-to-bead flat protection, with a doubled layer just under the tread for extra puncture resistance.
The Tenaci in this 30mm is quoted at 360g in tubeless and 301g in the clincher for use with tubes.
Ere Omnia road race tire
The Omnia is Ere’s all around race tire. With a smooth centerline, paired with prominent raised ridges along the shoulders it can be tasked for everyday road rides, racing, or even training.
Built much like their top-level road race tire with a 120tpi casing and aramid protection just under the tread, it gets some larger volume options to tackle rougher roads. The Omnia will also be available in the same 65a compound. Pick them up in 24, 26, 28, or 30mm widths in tubeless or regular clinchers. Pricing is the same at the Tenaci – £67.50/75€ for tubeless or £63/70€ for clinchers.
The Omnia in this 26mm is quoted at 255g in tubeless and 217g in the clincher for use with tubes. The thinner 24mm version is 248g & 197g, respectively.
Tech Details & Setup Accessories
Each of Ere Research’s tire tread designs are available in both separate tubeless and tubed clincher versions and in a wide range of sizes. When you buy a tubeless tire from Ere, it comes with a 48mm tubeless valve and the sealant you will need to set it up on your own tubeless wheel. If you buy a clincher tire, it includes the appropriately sized Tubus inner tube and a 40mm valve extender.
Ere tires include one of three levels of aramid fiber flat protection from just under the tread to doubled up bead-to-bead puncture protection. Almost all of their vulcanized tires also feature supple 120tpi casing construction.
Other road bike tires in the Ere Research line-up
Beyond the tires we’ve already seen in person, Ere Research has several other road tires on offer. The Genus is their pro-level road racing tire with a slick center and a dot-patterned shoulder in 24, 26 &28mm widths. Pontus is a proper wet weather road tire with water extracting grooves from edge to edge in 24 or 26mm. The Tempus is a fully slick time trial tire with sidewall dimples to create laminar airflow, and comes in pleasantly wide 26 & 28mm widths and low rolling resistance tubeless-only construction. And lastly the Tormentum is a 24mm clincher-only tire made from a hard rubber only to spend its life indoors in your pain cave strapped down to a stationary trainer.
Availability
Ere Research has been expanding their international distribution channels since the start of the year – with an aim to ship out of warehouses in Europe, the US, and Taiwan. You can buy their tires through the regular independent bike dealer network, so ask your local shop about them. For now Send It will get them to shops in Canada, OneWay to shops in Europe & the UK. US availability will happen soon too, and online direct sales are potentially also in the works.
