DZR Shoes just dropped some limited edition S240 LTD boots, saying they’re built for bikepacking. The clipless riding shoes take their name from Grant Peterson’s sub 24 hour overnighter camping by bike concept – bikepacking before it was cool. What makes them bikepacking specific?

Bikepacking is surely growing in popularity, but much like we wondered what a gravel-specific shoe was, these brought the same questions to mind. Well, in reality the S24O LTD isn’t actually bikepacking-specific, but they probably would make a decent shoe for a mix of pedaling and tooling around camp.

The shoes themselves aren’t really all that new – the LTD has been in DZR’s lineup for a while, even available now in a fully waterproof version or some very affordable sale synthetic seconds.

Tech Details

But the S24O edition mixes a classic work boot look, a flannel lining, and the same tech features that already make the LTD a good on & off the bike shoe. They have a natural gum rubber sole, with a chain-link tread pattern for good grip on a range of surfaces. Then a recessed cleat pocket makes them work with SPD (and Crankbrothers) pedals, keeping the cleats from touching the ground when off the bike, and with a full-length nylon shank that balance good efficiency while pedaling with walkability.

The upper is made from a tough, lightweight leather and uses boot style lacing for the mid-height cuff. Reflective details on the heel add a touch of extra visibility.

The S24O LTD boots are available now from DZR for $149, but in limited numbers. Only sizes 43-46 seem to be available already, so act fast.

Their website doesn’t mention it, so I doubt it.

I have tried several pairs of DZR shoes since they released the “Rondel” shoe almost ten years ago.

They are some of the most poorly made and overpriced bike shoes I have ever had the displeasure of spending my money on. Not only did they not stand up to the regular rigors of daily use, they were not comfortable at all to cycle OR walk in. I realize this is a fine balance to strike when designing a casual cycling shoe, but I find a typical SPD/MTB/Trail shoe 100x more comfortable to walk around in.

This isn’t to say DZR is the only company with this problem; Chrome makes similar sneakers and are equally uncomfortable, but they are at least more affordable and built a lil’ bit tougher.

I wanted to like DZR but the pair I got was hands down the single worst pair of shoes I ever owned. My biggest problem was the difference in sole thickness between the left and right shoes!!! Imagine how something like that makes your back feel after wearing them for a while. After one day in the shoes I felt like i had aged 17 years…my back and knees were all buggered up.
I actually threw them away instead of taking them to the goodwill. I didn’t want someone else to have to deal with them.
