We’re still a ways off from completely lifelike training in virtual reality, but with Wahoo’s help, we’re getting closer. First it was the wild KICKR CLIMB that actively moves your bike up and down to mimic the conditions in programs like Zwift. Now? You can add a speed sensitive fan to that mix.
Called the KICKR HEADWIND, the new device is a very fancy fan that may make your workouts a little more interesting. Using a Bluetooth or ANT+ connection, the HEADWIND can vary the intensity of the breeze based on the the rider’s speed. And since it’s open source, developers from programs like Zwift could use it mimic headwinds and other wind related events in the game.
Most importantly though, the fan is compact, quiet, and perfect for popping in front of your trainer to cool you down during your indoor rides. Available now, it sells for $249.
For those without a trainer yet, Wahoo Fitness also introduced the new KICKR CORE which is positioned as a more affordable alternative to the KICKR.
Using a simple steel frame, the CORE uses Wahoo’s Quiet Drive technology with a 12lb flywheel, but ships without a cassette or speed sensor and doesn’t adjust for different hub heights. However, you still get a direct mount trainer with 8, 9, 10, and 11 speed compatibility that also includes the spacers and adapters to run 130/135mm QR and 142×12 and 148x12mm thru axles. Maximum power is limited to 1800 watts with a +/-2% accuracy and 16% maximum grade. The trainer is still compatible with ANT+, Bluetooth, and FE-C devices and sells for $899.
And finally, at the top end, the KICKR also gets a few updates. Most notably, the trainer is now 5-7 decibels quieter with a 70-80% drop in frequency for a quieter trainer experience that won’t vibrate the whole house. That also includes the bump to a 16lb flywheel and a system that can handle 2200 watts for even better training feel. Smaller changes include a change to the handle that makes it easier to mount bikes with flat mount disc brakes. Otherwise, it’s the same KICKR we know and love for $1199.99.
