Within the city limits, New York City is fairly flat. But in the future? Well, in the future there will be KOMs paved in glass. At least, that’s how the creative minds at Zwift see the city evolving in 2118. In an effort to further gamify your training and distract you from the fixed position of your indoor trainer, Zwift has launched their latest expansion world, New York City.

While there will be a number of exciting new additions, there should also be plenty of recognizable landmarks for anyone who has visited the famous city. From Central Park to the Guggenheim, the Met, El Dorado Hotel, and Tavern on the Green, Future New York is not devoid of its current institutions.

It does however include futuristic suspended glass roads which will make the world more challenging and give you far more climbing opportunities. Zwift says the world has been inspired by many of the video games their development team loved in the 90’s. It also helped that Zwift’s co-Founder and CEO Eric Min, along with Zwift’s Mike McCarthy and Charlie Issendorf grew up racing in Central Park during the 80’s.

The update should be live now, so boot up those devices and take a spin around an all new world. Zwift will be hosting a virtual Tour of New York starting October 23rd, with a five stage event to show off the new world. Finish all five stages, and as usual, you’ll unlock an exclusive in-game kit.

New York’s 10 new routes

  • RISING EMPIRE – 12.9 miles // 1234 ft.

Hit the KOM in both directions on this climber’s course

  • PARK PERIMETER LOOP – 6.0 miles // 413 ft.

The outermost loop of the park

  • THE HIGHLINE – 6.5 miles // 587 ft.

Ride elevated roads in the skies above Central Park

  • LADY LIBERTY – 7.6 miles // 676 ft.

A steep climb up to the KOM before a long lap around the park

  • MIGHTY METROPOLITAN – 12.4 miles // 1043 ft.

Traverse most of the park and elevated roads in a meandering loop

  • ASTORIA LINE 8 – 7.1 miles // 466 ft.

Named for the first NYC subway line, take a figure 8 path around the park

  • KNICKERBOCKER – 13.9 miles // 1198 ft.

This mostly flat route has some grit in it with one trip up the KOM via the steep route

  • GRAND CENTRAL CIRCUIT – 4.2 miles // 472 ft.

Circuit course that takes the steep route up and down the KOM with a short loop around the Sprint in between

  • EVERYTHING BAGEL – 21.3 miles // 1788 ft.

Hit the Sprint and KOM in both directions on this long, looping route

  • THE 6 TRAIN – 4.0 miles // 226 ft.

The shortest route around the park is flat and fast

These city maps suck. Would it be so hard to add alpe d’huez and other real cycling spots.

Do you realize that Zwift added the Alpe du Zwift? It’s the same route and profile as Alpe d’Huez, but located in Watopia and has unique scenery.

I’m with Chader. You must not use Zwift. I’ve climbed it three times so far and it’s rough.

I somewhat agree since I like to climb too, but I rode this expansion this morning and even though I think it’s shorter than Richmond there’s a lot more going on and I think it will be more interesting. The “KOM” is only 222 feet of elevation gain the way I rode it, that’s not really a climb. BUT, since this is future NYC I think they could add a suspended road that climbs up a skyscraper or something like that, that would be cool. So don’t get too upset about lack of climbs yet, I bet they will add to the map.

When are they going to make a ZWAGBRAI map so I can drink michelob ultra on the trainer?

No distance was covered and no elevation was gained.

How insightful. You’ve apparently discovered something that was heretofore unknown by mankind.

You’d be surprised how many people think you can add it to your daily, weekly, monthly and yearly totals. I’m just here to remind them of sporting truth, sporting ethics, sporting fact, sporting honesty.

So people aren’t free to do as they choose, to categorize or structure their own data as they please?

With logic like that, I can see why you choose to remain anonymous.

Sporting what? How people calculate their annual mileage/hours actually bothers you? I’m glad there’s peace in the middle east and we’ve solved world hunger.

I don’t think I can. I KNOW I CAN. It’s my data; I’ll do with it as I please. I bet you’re a blast to ride with…

When will they make a bikepacking route so I can ride my plus-size Surly and make crappy coffee in my Ti dangle cup and smoke weed in my Ti dangle bong?

I found the expansion mildly interesting however I’d really like 2 things. One is simply in a structured workout for it to display lap average power, secondly can we get an option to get w/kg prominently displayed (like how they have watts displayed) while doing a group ride.
