The start of the Digger project was a couple of years back when Nukeproof’s mountain bike team were looking for a training bike, something to crank out some base miles, maybe run around town on. But seeing as they were a bunch of shredders, a standard road bike wouldn’t do, nor would a run-of-the-mill gravel bike. So Nukeproof created the Digger an affordable wide dropbar bike with monster tire clearance, simple 1x drivetrains & hydro brakes to add a little spice to your commute, while still being ready to scout new trails too…

We actually got a pretty good look at the newest iteration of the Digger late last autumn. But the new bike is available now, so warrants another look and that dose of training ride inspiration up above via Elliott Heap & Caldwell Visuals film.

Nukeproof calls the bike a “confused beast”. It’s not meant to be the fastest on the road -but you can stick a set of 700c wheels in there with some fat slicks for some quick base miles. It’s not meant to be the most capable trail bike – but you can fit proper 27.5 trail or 29er XC tires on it. It is a versatile bike that will be a blast to ride, however you choose to.

Nukeproof Digger Tech Details

Let’s get to the nitty-gritty of the new bike. The Digger is a an all-new triple-butted, hydroformed alloy frame with a full carbon, tapered steerer fork, using updated all-surface geometry in three four stock sizes.

Geometry Update: A note here, a previous geometry table had been inadvertently posted here that was for the Scout trail hardtail. The new table above is the correct geo for the gravel Digger. Sorry, for any confusion.

It gets internal routing in the front triangle including for a 31.6mm dropper seatpost, plus a threaded BSA BB, flat mount brake, rear rack mounts & full coverage fender eyelets.

It uses mountain bike standard SRAM 1×11 drivetrains and 12x142mm & 15x100mm bolt-on thru-axle wheels. You know you have some extra pre-Boost wheels collecting dust somewhere, just waiting to give this bike multiple personalities with a few different tire setup options.

Nukeproof says the bike is optimized for fat 700c tire or 27.5 Road Plus, but expands on that a bit recommending up to 700x45mm road tires & 27.5×2.3″ or even 29×2.1″ mountain bike tires to get really serious.

That is an awesome build. That is about everything I want for a super commuter/rain bike.

65° head angle. Man, that is SLACK for a road-isa bike.

Looks like a great cross+ bike, but that cable routing down the driveside seatstay is gross. I understand that they wanted to have internal routing on an aluminum frame, but that’s an eyesore. Would look great as a SS though!

Other than offending your esthetic sensibilities what is the problem with cable routing? It doesn’t look like it will cause any functional issues. In my cursory review of current pro level CX bikes (which this is not, but that resource sets the bar for functional designs that will work in horrific conditions) every Shimano pro has Di2 (so irrelevant) and the SRAM riders routing is a combo of top tube internal then down seat stay or down tube internal and across the chain stay.

I wonder how this compares with the Surly Midnight Special, which I have also been looking at recently.

If you’ve been “looking at recently”, how did you not come up with your own comparison? One is aluminum with a carbon fork and thru axles, one is a steel frame and fork with QR, but eyelets for a rack. One comes in different build spec and colors, the other as a complete or frame set only in white. That took a whopping 2min. What else do you need to know?

65 degree head angle means it’s ready for the bike park as well!

i think that geometry chart is for another bike entirely.

The geometry is far too slack for me. Long chainstays… It might work well as a backcountry touring bike?

So close to being my perfect bike… wish they threw sliders on the back, but that’s a feature not many want I guess.

Companies no longer care about single speed because the majority of people don’t either. At Iceman, when I first raced it 10 years ago, there were over 100 single speeders just in the under 39 catigory. It’s shrinks every year and this year us was less than 40. There is talk that alot of the gravel races are dropping ss catigories for lack of attendance.

They say Nukeproof wheels but still show WTB rims. No mention of weight but the Pro has to be a 23 or 24 pound bike stock w those wheels and the dropper. right?

the website says the Pro version is 21.5 lbs. Not back for an aluminum frame with a dropper post.

Weight figures on websites are notoriously inaccurate.

Seems like a lot of bike for the money, would be a blast up here in Vermont.

Nice frame and price point. Myopic spec:
Why in the world have a dropper w/o suspension fork up front?

With those fat tires you can still take descents, it still helps to get down low.

Roadies. Just get a mountain bike. I can’t wait until this drop bar xc fad is over.

BTW, this bike sold out in all sizes in like a week on both Chain Reaction and Wiggle. That is a hot bike.
