State Bicycle Co. is known for their fun collaborations with bastions of pop culture. One of the very few bike companies (maybe only?) to have officially licensed tie ins with the Simpsons, State also made waves with their custom SPD Yeezys. After setting up Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker with a bike for cruising around town earlier in 2018, Booker had the idea of giving the whole team a special Christmas present…
…a custom bike from State Bicycle Co. To make it happen, State Co-Founders Medhi and Reza Farsi took their standard 6061 Black Label series and added a few custom touches.
Since these are basketball players and not track racers, State wanted to make sure they had front and rear brakes. Since they expected the team to keep the brakes in place in the future, internal cable routing was added for the rear brake. And since you don’t want to be responsible for blowing out the knee of a pro baller, it looks like the bikes are set up with freewheels as well.
Up front, wider MTB bars were added to fit the massive riders.
Along those same lines, State says that while their standard XL 62cm frame worked for some of the players, they had to create a special XXL 66cm frame for the taller players on the team that are over 7′ tall. State’s Sales Manager Melissa demonstrates the armpit level saddle height of Deandre Ayton’s XXL above.
Each bike was customized for the individual player with their name and number, and delivered in the parking garage at their first home game after Christmas.
While the team seemed to enjoy their new rides, it didn’t help them win that day. Perhaps they were just too excited, thinking about their new bikes!
