Ah, these lovely mommy blog aluminum nonsense regurgitations.

First of all, there is no direct link between aluminum water bottles and Alzheimer. In fact, there is no direct link between aluminum exposure and Alzheimer in humans. Just go to any reputable Alzheimer site and they will tell you the exact same. I know you won’t, so I paraphrase them.

This ignorant notion that aluminum water bottles and cooking ware cause Alzheimer, comes from a research from 1965 where researchers injected mice with extreme high doses of aluminum and the mice developed Alzheimer. These results were only seen with the aforementioned extremely high exposures that far exceed the levels that can enter the body through food or potentially through contact with aluminium cookware. But mommy blogs and the likes made it go viral. You gotta love all the Gwyneth Paltrows blogs out there, either exaggerating benign stuff of just straight up making weird shit up.

Back to my lecture: however, multiple other small and large scale studies have failed to find a convincing causal association between aluminium exposure in humans and the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

It does appear that there is a relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and naturally occurring metals. Iron, zinc, copper and aluminum are associated with the hallmark Alzheimer’s proteins amyloid and tau in the brain. The exposure to aluminum, iron, zinc and copper does not mean they cause the disease. We simply do not fully understand the mechanism that causes the development of the disease and (normal/real life) exposure has been ruled out.

But if you do believe in this aluminum causes Alzheimer nonsense, you better stop using iron water bottles and cooking ware too, because by extending your reasoning, they are associated too. And probably not drink your tap water either. Because you are *exposed* to copper.

Or, you believe the researchers and go on with your life and use your aluminum water bottles & steel cookware and drink tap water.

To add context to your EU regulation claim, can coatings are not regulated by an EU-wide legislation, but national measures are in place in the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, France, and Spain. Manufacturers do it anyway in case consumers add acidic drinks in aluminum water bottles.

Long story slightly shorter: aluminium solubility is pH-dependent and aluminium is insoluble in the pH range 5-9. Tap water, in general, is 6.5 to 9.5 pH in the EU and UK (excluding US data, could). Furthermore, unlined aluminium forms an oxidized layer, aluminium oxide, which is insoluble in water.
I wouldn’t fill it up with a coke or an acidic beverage, solely because the taste of acidic beverages and foods might change in unlined aluminum containers.

But for water, there will be no ‘leeching’ aluminium into the water and it certainly will not alter the taste of water.

Side note, from the approximately 1% of aluminum the body absorbs, 95% of that is taken out by the body. In fact, we excrete on average about 25 to 30 mg of aluminium per day through our urine. So our body is perfectly capable of taking out digested aluminum and we have been evolved to do so to over hundreds of thousands of years as a species.

Unlined aluminium bottles are safe, period.
