Last autumn Pole stretched out their all-new, fully CNC machined alloy mountain bike concept with the addition of a 180mm travel 29er Stamina that could go from enduro shredder, even to DH racer. They were so happy with the bike’s predecessor, Pole had already decided it needed a baby brother, the new 140mm travel Bushmaster trail bike.

2019 Pole Bushmaster, aka Stamina 140: 140mm 29er trail bike

Pole’s new Bushmaster is the next evolution of their long front end mountain bike designed to excel on technical trails without huge changes in elevation. At first glance the Bushmaster frame looks almost exactly the same as the much longer travel Stamina (although it gets black anodized links to stand apart).

In fact, Pole says the Bushmaster was named and on the drawing board as the next step after their first long-travel Machine. But after refining the longer enduro bike for EWS racing, they designed the new trail bike by riding the 180mm Stamina on singletrack, dialing it back to make it more fun to pedal (and easier to manual.)

Both bikes do share the same overall two-part machined aluminum sandwich frame concept, but obviously the trail bike gets scaled down for shorter travel and trimmed a bit for weight. Pole teased us that this shorter, playful trail bike was in the works already last fall, reminding that their concept of designing & manufacturing the bike completely in Finland lets them turn around a new bike design to consumer is a fraction of the time a carbon bike would take, without the negative environmental impacts.

The 1x only Bushmaster shares the same short-link, linkage driven suspension layout of the longer Stamina with its eccentric pivot around the bottom bracket that Pole likes for its ability to for the bike down for travel.

It still gets Pole’s signature long wheelbase (albeit 15mm shorter), a steep seat tube, and modern slack head angle. The bike is offered in four stock frame sizes S-XL, all with the same slack 64° headtube, 78.6° effective seattube, and 450mm chainstays.

The raw 7075 T6 aluminum frame gets Pole’s latest specially dust-sealed axles pivots that won’t trap water inside, fully external cable routing (plus an internal loop for a dropper post), and three bottle cage mounts. It even features an integrated OneUp multi-tool in the steerer. The bike uses an integrated tapered headset, 73mm threaded bottom bracket, post mount brake, Boost rear end, low direct mount chain guide, and 34.9mm seatpost.

The new Bushmaster shares the mega tire clearance of its longer enduro brethren. The 29er can fit up to 2.8″ wide 29″ wheels, or can be built up 27.5+ with up to 3″ wide tires.

I’m going to take the lack of an advertised weight to mean it weighs a ton.

If it’s anything like The Machine it will be in the region of 8lb for the size L, so not ludicrous for a metal frame with a 1300mm wheelabse, but not exactly Flyweight either.

That’s kinda sorta a ton for this segment. Too bad, I would love to have a billet aluminum frame. Even if you used all of the Gucci lightweight stuff it (building a $12K bike) would end up being a 28+lb bike. Too much for a trail bike when that number can be mid 25’s. For far less money.

Owning a Mondraker I can tell you that whatever time you think you are loosing with 2 extra pounds climbing is made up for 2x by the additional confidence inspired on the descents by the ultra-long wheelbase & geometry.

Whats more fun climbing or descending faster?

Weight is so far down the list of metrics I consider for a trail bike, its nearly a non-issue. What trail bike with real, rideable tires is 25lbs?

If you think 30lbs is heavy for a trail bike you need to get stronger…my “trail bike” weighs 40lbs and it doesn’t stop me from doing 8 hour rides.

I really like that. Pole rider Joe Nation has been riding seriously fast recently on his new bikes.
