Looking for every possible advantage, more and more pro DH riders are considering 29ers for their race bikes. While that detail certainly hasn’t been overlooked by the fans or the press, one thing that hasn’t gotten a lot of attention is their brakes. Larger, heavier wheels and tires generally benefit from bigger and stronger brakes, which is why TRP is introducing a new (to them) rotor size.

Apparently in testing by both Aaron Gwin and Neko Mulally since late 2018, the new TRP DH-R brake has been developed around thicker rotors. Measuring 2.3mm thick instead of the usual 1.8mm on standard rotors, the increased thickness was originally intended for the e-bike world. Understandably, the increased thickness and larger 223mm diameter offer increased braking performance for the fastest DH riders on the planet, particularly when riding bigger wheels. The thicker rotors not only help shed heat, but they also better resist deformation with increased strength and stiffness.

Even though TRP is still staying mum on the specifics, they have again acknowledged that they are continuing their drivetrain development. Stating that “the focus remains on product testing and development with a larger group of international riders,” no further details are given in terms of specifications or availability.

However, you’ll likely see the product on a number of teams including the Intense Factory, Scott DH factory, Commencal/100%, and YT Mob in the coming season.
