Club Ride awards 2019 Impact Grant to build trail for NICA in WV Club Ride Apparel just awarded its inaugural Impact Grant to a trail crew based near Cacapon State
Park, WV. The $2500 grant supports the group in completing a trail system to be used by  local National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) high school teams, and will also serve as their home race course during NICA competition.

This trail system started back in 2017 when the community saw the need for more local trail access, developed together with the State Park’s Superintendent Scott Fortney and setting aside 1,000 acres of the park primarily for trails. Cacapon State Park also staged a local enduro race fundraiser this spring, and gave all of the proceeds from camping to help fund the new trails.

Trail crew spokesman Mark Hoyle explains, “The Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia just started its first NICA composite team this year under the leadership of Teresa Collins. The Northern Shenandoah Valley does not yet have a team, but with the work our group of volunteers has been performing is starting one. Therefore, the impact for the local community will be to have something missing: a beginner loop to get kids off the couch and on a bike. We do not currently have beginner trails in the area.

The volunteer team plans to use the funds to complete the trail system in time for students to return this fall. ClubRideApparel.com/blogs

Advocacy & other important news

  • New legislation on mountain bike in federal Wilderness Areas – The Sustainable Trails Coalition wants to give a shoutout to Senator Mike Lee of Utah for introducing S.1695, the Human-Powered Travel in Wilderness Areas Act of 2019. The legislation would give federal agencies additional authority to regulate bicycling and other human-powered travel in federal Wilderness areas. STC thanks Senator Lee for his principled leadership and urges people to support the legislation. For more information go to: SustainableTrailsCoalition.org

  • In Tandem: Dogfish Head & Revelation brew Independence Day beer – This July 4th Dogfish Head and Revelation Craft Brewing Company are coming together to celebrate all things independent – the country’s independence, independent craft breweries & beer, independent businesses, and their region’s ability (thanks to things like the Delaware Rails-to-Trails bike paths) to be independent from motorized vehicles to explore many local wonders. They are doing so with the release of In Tandem, a summer-centric Hefeweizen brewed with locally-grown malt, wheat & strawberries. Actually, Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione and Revelation founder Patrick Staggs hopped on a tandem bike and rode to a local farm to pick the strawberries used to brew the beer, so there’s that too.
