Urge Bike Products adds two all-new lightweight, affordable mountain bike helmets for 2020 – the adult Venturo and kids’ MidJet. Urge continues to impress, cranking out top-level MTB head production at surprisingly affordable prices, and often with an environmentally responsible leaning. In fact for their 2020 range, Urge say they’ve managed to manufacture ALL of their helmets from a majority of recycled material content – and these two new lids lead the charge as their most eco-friendly…
Urge Venturo light, cheap eco-responsible mountain bike helmet
When I hear about a new well-ventilated, full-coverage trail bike helmet made from 85% recycled materials and with a weight of just 400g, I really don’t expect affordability. But Urge’s new Venturo surprises at just 49€.
Eco-friendly, eco-responsible mountain bike helmets
Urge has always had eco-friendly roots, and for 2020 they say they’ve had enough with generating unnecessary plastics & synthetics. The new Venturo (and MidJet, below) highlight their new move towards 85% recycled helmet structure. These new helmets are made from recycled EPS (Expanded PolyStyrene) foam made from auto industry waste, recycled ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) for the visor (and 1/3 of their new Gringo chin bar), and recycled PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate) for the woven helmet straps from used plastic bottles.
And beyond the helmets, Urge is cutting down on waste & environmental impacts by revamping their packaging. All 2020 helmets get packaged & shipped in single-color, recyclable cardboard boxes with no plastic packaging or moisture bags. And the helmets themselves are protected in transit, inside of bags made from a compostable starch. Urge understands that bike helmets & their packaging alone aren’t going to change the world. But at the same time they realize “how important it is to reduce the impact on the environment related to our hobbies”, and have the ability to offer industry leading protection in a more “eco-responsible” way.
Venturo tech details
Getting back to the details on the Venturo, the new cross-country to trail bike helmet then rates as a 6 out of 7 on Urge’s eco-responsible index. No other helmet in their line-up beats that for now.
The Venturo features large open vents and low occipital protection in the back, plus a fixed visor.
A simple dial closure pulls a 360° plastic retention ring for a comfortable, secure fit all the way around your head.
The new 49€ mountain bike helmet is expected to be available in two sizes S/M & L/XL to fit heads from 54-61cm, with a claimed 400g weight for the smaller size or 434g for the larger. It comes in three colors – black, white & slate gray.
Urge MidJet affordable, eco-responsible kids’ mountain bike helmet
Along the same lines as the Venturo, Urge has a new eco XC-trail mountain bike helmet for kids too – the MidJet. It gives all the protection of an adult helmet for shredding singletrack, the same eco-responsible 6/7 rating for its recycled content, and an even lower 39€ price tag.
The 2020 MidJet will come in just one size, with a claimed weight of 230g, and three color options: red, hi-vis yellow & black. It uses the same recycled EPS foam, recycled ABS visor & recycled PET straps as the Venturo, and gets a similar dial closure fit.
Venturo, MidJet & Urge 2020 helmet range availability
The new Venturo & MidJet helmets will be available starting in about two weeks, from the middle of October. At that time there will also be updated 2020 colors of their popular Gring-O-Matic removable chin bar enduro helmet, their top trail Endur-O-Matic 2, the affordable Drift full face & several more…
