Over the summer Italian bikemaker De Rosa & Italian car designer Pininfarina introduced a new look for the 66 year old bike brand, dropping the bubbly logo & two-tone paint for a more modern san serif look, still retaining that red heart at its core. Now the latest version of their Super King aero road bike, which teased the new look, is set to hit shops with a more aerodynamic & lighter design.

On the outside, the new SK Pininfarina doesn’t look so different from its predecessor debuted back in 2015. But the second generation of the Super King Pininfarina gets some subtle tube shaping refinements to clean up air flow, plus a noticeable lack of any external cables – everything tucked neatly inside, from handlebar through the stem and into the frame.

Another big change, no longer will a rim brake version be offered. The new SK Pininfarina is disc brake only with flat mount calipers and 12mm thru-axles.

New De Rosa look, logo & heart

De Rosa says that their bikes have always had heart, so when designer Pininfarina set out to give the brand a new look that was set to stay. But it was time for a more modern look that will take over all the new De Rosa bikes, something they call vintage futurism.

Tech details

The new SK Pininfarina now gets a completely flat, thinner horizontal toptube with a hidden wedge-style seatpost clamp that is now entirely flush mounted. The shape of the seattube is also slightly tweaked for aerodynamic gains, from the smaller lower rear wheel cutout fin that no longer needs to accommodate a rim brake to the more aero proprietary seatpost profile.

In addition to routing all cabling inside the 1.5″ steerer tube with an FSA ACR system headset, the fork itself is all new, with more smoothly tapered legs and improved airflow around the tire. The bottom bracket is press fit BB 386EVO.

On top of all that, De Rosa shaved weight of the new aero road bike, bringing it down to a claimed 950g (medium-sized frame), with a 370g fork.

How do we know it’s aero? Where is the test data? What are the qualifications of their engineers?

I feel like you buy this bike because it _looks_ fast (and sexy as sh*t), not because it’s scientifically proven to _be_ fast.
Also, has to be one of the most affordable Pinninfarina-designed vehicles that exists.

Velo Kitty asks “ How do we know it’s aero? ….. What are the qualifications of their engineers?”

What are the qualifications of the Pininfarina design studio? If you don’t know, you should ask the internet first to save discovering you just publicly questioned the masters and founders of Aero design.

Pininfarina is responsible for the styling and design of the modern Ferrari. They are the Italian founders of Aero and style.

Call yourself Velo Kitty!.. & don’t know who Pininfarina are or the’re track record! And as far as the comments about it looking the same as everyone else’s design, then if a bike starts looking like every other manufacturers aero bike, then they must be on the right track… just like cars all looking like jelly moulds…they have to all form the same shape to achieve the lowest drag coefficient.

Right on. Without branding I doubt I could tell the two apart.

It’s easy to tell which is the DeRosa. Look for the lazy “aero” seat stay to seat tube junction.

If you want to buy a mass produced soulless bike then buy any of the popular brands…if you want to buy a top quality Italian handmade bike that has panache, then get a De Rosa or Colnago C64…no one at the start line, or cafe is going to look twice at a Trek (or any other Chinese made bike) when it’s next to a quality handmade bike…& until you’ve ridden one (set up properly) you’ll never know.

Ride a Derosa fast …10/10ths. Then try and ride a specialized or giant the same way. Ditto for Porsche vs Toyota or a Corvette …… Those that can ride … just know
