Here’s yet another reason why more companies should be adding top tube mounts to their bikes. If you’re not using the spot to carry some extra gear in the form of a top tube bag, it seems like a pretty smart place to mount your computer, particularly for off-road use. It’s still visible while you’re in the saddle, but it also may keep your pricey bit of electronics away from harm in the event of a crash.

With more bikes than ever offering top tube mounts, K-Edge says that they have been hearing quite a few requests for a specific computer mount for this location. Which makes sense – if the likelihood of a crash is high, having your GPS positioned on top of your bar or out front, could be a recipe for disaster. This probably won’t be the mounting method of choice for many riders, but it’s always great to have options. The Top Tube mount will sell for $39.99.

Offered with both Garmin and Wahoo approved inserts, these plastic discs are designed to protect the mounting tabs on the computer in case you do manage to impact the GPS in a crash. There’s also a tether pass through for extra protection.

Designed to work with every size of head unit, the mounts offer multiple mounting positions to allow you to fine tune the fit. Moving forward, the Garmin insert will also have a new pass through hole which allows you to access the mounting screw with the insert in place. That allows for the forward mounting hole to be easily used. Technically, it seems like you could do the same with the Wahoo insert, but it would require removal of the insert to reach the bolt underneath.

More importantly, that will mean that their Gravity Cap users will now be able to install and remove the cap, as well as adjust the headset without having to remove the insert.

What else is new with K-Edge? Well, they were excited to pass along this photo of a certain jersey that just arrived at their office. Yes, that is a Yellow Jersey from the 2019 Tour de France signed by Julian Alaphilippe. You know, just a thank you from the Frenchman for the excellent mounts used during an exciting Tour.

Ah perfect spot to be crushed by balls of steel, or more realistically knocked by a knee while climbing.

Seems like a super stupid place to put a computer. At least bags have some give when you scrape with your knee out of the saddle.

Just checked a Garmin 1030 on a few bikes. The top tubes are wider than the computer on the Cannondale Topstone carbon and aluminium and the Salsa Warbird and Journeyman. The GT Grade is narrower by a couple of mm, but the 830 and wahoo bolt both are narrower.

I normally put my garmin on the stem… And visibility is bad. On t he top tube it purely would become a recording device.

The issue with the top tube is that you can’t look at it without things getting dangerous. Top cap amounts are already inconvenient location wise. Toptube bags with a phone are worst. This contraption is much worse than either.

If I’m going to look once an hour because i can’t look at it all the time, I can put the computer in my jersey pocket…

An expensive solution to a problem which doesn’t exist and could in any case be done equally well and for nothing with the existing supplied mount that comes with most computers as standard.
The top tube is not the place to be looking for information during a ride.

You’re missing the point. A lot of riders (including myself) don’t want to look at the computer while riding. I actually want this more for a mountain bike than anything else – but more MTB manufacturers need to get on board this mounting trend first. As long as this would clear the handlebar in a crash where the bars turn completely around, I would be interested in it. Top tubes are long enough now that hitting it with your knees shouldn’t be an issue, and this seems like it would be far more protected than the stem/bars while still putting it close at hand to operate when stopped.

Just flip your out front mount around so that it’s behind the bar. Problem solved.

You would probably end up hitting with your knee when you go to stand and pedal.

Just use a GPS watch instead much easier 🙂

I like the product! Thankfully my Garmin comes with extra long bands that secure the mount to the toptube easily.

Seems like a stupid idea to put your Garmin unit in the same place where you would normally put a top tube bag

Can this be mounted inside the frame in a water bottle mount?

Wow so many negative Nancy’s !!! I have tried a variety of different mounts and they just don’t work. Out in front? Will get destroyed in a crash. Seldom do I have the need to actually look at my gps. Are you all riding in new places every ride? My top tube is the perfect place if I could only find the right size rubber bands for my Garmin mount. Even then the mount will not be as solid as a fixed mount. For reference I ride a 2019 trek fuel ex 9.8 and the top tube is plenty wide enough to protect the garmin. With traditional bar-mount and top cap options I have lost my 1000 several times as it is more exposed than if it were on the top tube.
