Swiss shoe company Suplest brings a welcome and major refresh to the complete range of cycling shoes for 2020, with completely new top-end Edge+ models in road, XC/gravel, and off road families. The Edge+ road & mountain race models feature all new upper construction and retention design, while a new Flat Pedal Pro shoe brings Boa fit and high-tech upper to enduro & all-mountain riders…
2020 Suplest Edge+ shoes reshape race fit for road, gravel & MTB
Even as Suplest has continued to refine materials and detailing over the years, this is the first major overhaul to the Edge family of on & off-road race shoes in four seasons. We tested the last Edge3 generation of Suplest’s road shoes, and while the still perform on par with many current shoes, it’s great to see a performance update to the upper & fit.
So what’s new?
The new Edge+ generation race shoes revises Suplest’s Anatomic Wrap with a new more asymmetric tongue design that shifts any pressure off the top of your foot, extending further towards the toe. The redesign also eliminates the mesh inserts in the both the toe & inside of the shoe against the cranks, achieving ventilation with laser cut perforations across the entirely new supple micro fiber upper.
Their Carbonshield, a thin carbon sheet reinforcing the lower portion of the tongue under the wrap, also gets redesigned. Made smaller & lighter to only focus on the upper portion of the instep where the cinching forces are higher, the reduced carbon shield still spreads the pressure under the wires of the dual Boa IP-1 dials to eliminate any hot spots. Now a thin carbon layer also reinforces the upper across the top of the tongue flap for more even distribution of pressure.
2020 Suplest Edge+ Road Pro premium carbon road bike shoe
In the top-spec 359€ Edge+ Road Pro shoes, all of that new tech gets fitted to an updated full UD carbon Ergo 360° sole.
The new sole uses a foam-filled hollow core for lower weight & 11% increased stiffness. It also gets new, larger SUP rubber forefoot pad and heel tread blocks that wrap around both toe & heel for improved protection and grip when stepping off the bike to walk.
The new Edge+ Road Pro shoes shed around ten grams off the previous generation for a claimed weight of 234g (size 42) per shoe, and include premium Solestar insoles. The shoes are available in three colors, white, black, or with red accents, and will add a limited gold accented Cancellara edition in March.
Performance spec versions with the same upper, a single Boa dial, and a less stiff & light carbon composite sole retail for 299€ in white or black with green accents.
2020 Suplest Edge+ Crosscountry Pro premium carbon XC bike shoe
The equally top-spec 359€ Edge+ Crosscountry Pro shoe shares the same upper, and gets its own newly designed carbon sole, ready for cross-country mountain bike racing or gravel riding.
The stiff carbon structure gets completely wrapped with a new grippy rubber tread & protection layer, also extending slightly over the toe & heel, developed together with fellow Swiss company SUPtraction. The design eliminates the issue where the previous version would get rocks & debris stuck between its angular tread blocks, and also moves toe-spike studs back a bit for additional grip in muddy or icy conditions.
The top Edge+ Crosscountry Pro shoe now has a claimed weight of 340g per shoe, and also includes Solestar insoles, available only in this black with red accents version.
A more affordable 249€ Performance spec gets all the same features, but downgrades to a single Boa dial and a slightly heavier, slightly less stiff carbon composite sole, available in all black or with bright green accents.
2020 Suplest Flat Pedal Pro performance all-mountain bike shoe
Actually the biggest departure for Suplest is the all-new Flat Pedal Pro mountain bike shoe. It’s the first mountain bike shoe they’ve developed without the need to clip-in, yet still gets a number of the performance upper feature of their race shoes.
A bonded polyurethane & mesh synthetic upper is said to have similar durability as Kevlar, while being lightweight & water resistant. The new trail shoes get a familiar Anatomic Wrap tongue design and single Boa L6 dial closure, just minus the carbon shield reinforcing. A strong rubberized & reinforced toe cap protects the front of the shoe, while similar protection on the inside prevents wear against your crank arm
The Bear Paw 5 sole was also developed with SUP, using a ‘variable dot’ layout to maximize security on pedal traction pins and retain walking grip.
The 169€ Flat Pedal Pro has a claimed weight of 380g per shoe, and is available in black with green or purple accents, with Solestar insoles.
All of the new 2020 Suplest Edge+ & off road shoes (except for the limited Fabian Cancellara edition) are available now both online, and from global Suplest dealers.
