We’ve debated what makes a gravel-specific pair of cycling shoes a number of time before. But without rehashing too much, suffice it to say that the Fizik Terra Powerstrap X4 fits the bill – with a sole that nicely balances walkability & all-day pedaling efficiency, plus hike-a-bike ready tread and a durable upper.
Starting from there, PEdALED created a special edition in the same dark teal color featured in their Jary all-road line-up, so you can be all matchy-matchy with your gravel getup.

Tech-wise everything is identical to the Fizik version, just with Pedaled in Japanese on the end of the strap. What defines the shoes is probably their no-nonsense Powerstrap wrap around straps. No fancy dials or ratchets to fiddle with (or break), just a high-quality velcro strap directly across the midfoot and a second zig-zagging over the forefoot. Light, simple, and low-cost.
I’ve been riding the mud/caramel Fizik ones all spring, and the level 6/10 reinforced nylon sole is stiff enough for on-road pedaling, with just enough flex – mainly in the toe & heel – so you can comfortably walk too. Low-profile rubber tread makes them surefooted on hard surfaces, but they get overwhelmed a bit on muddy or especially loose hike-a-bikes. (They aren’t mountain bike shoes.)
The laser-perforated microtex synthetic upper has stood up to a good bit of abuse by me, with only minor fraying of the upper strap that doesn’t affect its function. And a reinforced toe-cap keeps them from getting scuffed.
