Last year, Fizik debuted a lightweight, high-value performance road shoe based around two wide, wrap-around velcro Powerstraps. Now, a new walkable sole and SPD inserts make the new Powerstrap X4 Gravel the latest gravel road specific riding shoes…

We already liked the original road Powerstraps for their no-nonsense approach. By using a wrap around strap across the forefoot and a second, direct strap across the midfoot, you can get all of the adjustability of more complicated wire+dial systems at much less cost & even less weight. Sure laces have become a hot concept, but with high-quality velcro you get just as secure a fit, and much quicker & easier to manage.

The trick to transitioning to off-road riding was of course walkability. Fizik created a new reinforced nylon sole that still delivers a 6 (of 10?), making them them efficient pedaling but still with enough give to walk comfortably. Then on top of that, a new low-profile rubber outsole give durable grip on mixed surfaces for getting around off the bike.

The lugged tread extends up slightly to create small heel & toe bumpers while retaining a low-key road look. The uppers are made from Fizik’s standard microtex synthetic, with laser cut perforations for ventilation. And a reinforced toe cap should prevent them from getting scuffed up on the occasional hike-a-bike section.

The new $149 / 149€ Powerstrap X4 Gravel is available in half sizes from 37-47, plus 36 & 48, with a claimed 292g weight (one shoe, size 42). You can get them from global dealers or direct from Fizik now in in three colors: all black, Anthracite gray with Grape purple details, or dried Mud green with gum soles.

These look amazing, I wish they had holes for toe spikes so I could use them for CX.

Looks nice, but how will the Velcro perform when it is full of mud?

Yes!!! Thank you giro it’s about time a laceless shoe was available. I missed my old 3 strap strap shoes.

Funny how lace had completely disappeared and velcro were relegated to entry level by the end of 90’s whit the advent of boa and buckles. Now high end shoes starts using laces and velcro again as the next big thing.

Sure, the weight/comfort ratios of shoes has dramatically improved over the years but it makes more critical about the marketing speak. The technology matters less than the way it is executed.

Looks like a lovely shoe for my purposes and a possible (but pricier) contender to the Shimano RT4/RT5.

I’ve heard Fizik’s shoe lasts trend towards fitment of narrow feet, but a cursory look at the outsole looks like it’s as wide as my beat-up old Shimano RT33s at its narrowest point (which usually around the midfoot, on most cycling shoes), so this looks very promising.

Are the straps and Velcro in good condition still after some regular use?
