MXXY Outdoor mixes up a new take on active sports hydration with a new on-the-fly adjustability that lets you adjust the concentration of your water and sports drink electrolyte mix on the go. Using easy-to-clean dual Hydrapak reservoirs, the unique MXXY mixing valve lets you adjust sport drink concentration, or mix in a caffeinated drink as you ride.
MXXY dual-reservoir hydration pack with on-the-fly mixing
While many of us probably don’t really need to change our electrolyte mixture on the go, MXXY could be a big help on longer efforts where you might want to get an extra boost as the weather gets hotter. It also could allow you to ration out a high concentration energy drink mix for efforts where you’d be able to refill the water-only bladder mid-way through a ride or race. Or it might just be for those of us that sometimes want the taste of a sports drink, but then would also like to have regular water too when it’s time to wash down a stick gel.
Develop by a group of Marin County founders working together on the idea since 2017, the new MXXY project is being spearheaded by World Champion rock climber Sasha DiGiulian, proven design & engineering teams from the top of the outdoor recreation industry, and then produced together with hydration bladder partner Hydrapak. While MXXY Outdoor is new to the hydration pack market, they seem ready to deliver a top-tier product for those looking for a bit different approach to achieving optimal hydration.
MXXY mixing – How does it work?
The MXXY system works with two Hydrapak reservoirs that snap together before they slide into your pack as one. Fill the larger 1.5L one with water, and the smaller 750ml one with a caffeine, electrolyte or amino acid mixture, up to 2x as strong as you might normally drink. The BPA & PVC free bladders have Hydrapak’s wide fold open seal, and can be turned inside-out to clean by hand or in the dishwasher, and to dry. All of the drink mix flows through “single-rinse” tubing that is easy to clean.
The MXXY mixing valve itself works by pinching the outside of those tubes, so it never contacts the drink mix and doesn’t need to be cleaned.
The mixing valve itself is positioned just at the base of the concentrate bladder. There the mixed hose goes out over one shoulder to your bite valve, and over the other shoulder the MXXY remote lets you adjust the mixture as you ride.
The simple clip-on rotary controller gives 5-position mixture settings to dial in your preferred drink concentration on-the-fly.
Adjustable dual-reservoir hydration – Pricing & availability
The MXXY project launches today on Kickstarter with early bird pricing for their 7L carrying capacity Base Pack, dual bladders & mixing valve starting at $85 (final regular retail price of $130) and going up from there. The MXXY system will also retrofit into just about any existing hydration pack with hose routing over both shoulders and room for 2L or more of bladders.
Pick the solution that best fits your needs and dial in your ideal electrolytes and water mixture with the twist of a dial. Availability of the first MXXY systems for early backers in expected at least by the start of next year, no later than January 2021 to be ready for warm weather next spring.
In fact, MXXY says they are on track to have some of the first Hydration Packs on early supporters’ backs before Christmas 2020.
