Fizik are expanding their eMTB specific range with an all-new flat pedal shoe made specifically to meet the demands of eMTB. The Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 shoe is a wider platform version of their original Terra Ergolace flats, meant to give a better pedal connection and reduce the risk of foot roll. Let’s see what they’re all about.

The Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 shoe joins the Terra Aidon eMTB saddles in Fizik’s range of ebike specific kit. Their widened profile is designed to maximize contact and minimizes foot roll for a good pedal connection. The shoe features a Vibram outsole, a rubber we’ve also seen on some of Giro’s flat pedal offerings.

These aren’t the first eMTB flat pedal shoes we’ve seen, but they are one of very few options (so far). Italian manufacturers Gaerne gave us an exclusive first look at their G.Ray, G.Taser, and G.Arc shoes back last year, which are now broadly available. The Giro Jacket 2 shoes are the only other flat pedal e-bike shoes actually available for sale (as far as we know).

The Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 shoes are likely quite a bit lighter than Giro’s eMTB option. The Giro shoe weighs a claimed 415g in size 43, while Fizik claim their shoe weighs just 323g, though they don’t actually specify size. Gaerne claims just a bit more than these Fiziks at  355g (size 43) for a G.Ray flat pedal shoe, which is thankfully about 100g less than their clipless version we tried and found to be quite hefty. Gaerne’s lace-up G.Arc is a little lighter at 349g a shoe, still more than these.

Fizik say “Intentional engineering went into stripping weight and eliminating the excess material that would otherwise lead to the bulky look and sloppy fit of many mountain biking shoes, meaning it’s ready to blend in with civilization when the backcountry missions are complete”.

FIZIK EBIKE SHOES FOR FLAT PEDAL VIBRAM SOLE TREAD PATTERN

The X2’s outsole gets directional tread lugs, with the spacing and depth designed to bite into softer soil. The rubber is said to be ideal for gripping slick rocks while hiking. Hiking?! With an eMTB?! That was my reaction before I remembered that many ebike motors have a “walk” function, that makes it a hell of a lot easier to push your bike up stuff.

A compressed EVA mid-sole provides stability and cushioning, while the Vibram tread takes care of grip and traction. Fizik attribute the eMTB shoe with a stiffness index of 2, though we have no info from them as to where that sits on the scale.

The uppers are composed of a hard-wearing Ripstop fabric. Ergonomic laces take care of closure. A PU-laminated toecap and side reinforcements add further protection and durability.

    • A “conventinoal bike” version of these Terra Ergolace X2s has already existed since 2019. Those come with a pocket for two-bolt cleats.
